I'd imagine it's all down to the quality of the vinyl used. Very much the case of you getting what you pay for.

there are some good vinyl options on ebay. All sorts of logos,flowers etc. at a very reasonable price of around £7 for a sheet.

Funnily enough I saw this old banger at the weekend which made me laugh. Have you ever considered the Sylvester and Tweety approach?
On a serious note though I think the flowers would look good. We've always talked about hibiscus over the blue portions of the van but never gone for it.
Most decent vinyl will last a fair few years. In the worst case you can heat the vinyl with a hairdryer at a low heat to remove them quickly if they start to look a little rough.

Blimey - it's hardly an old banger! An early Noughties Megane Cabrio was quite a decent looking car in its day. Apart from it being French and all that.
