What a really great piece of kit. My to do / must have list just keeps on getting longer.

With your gadgets and go faster stripes, I am constantly amazed by your love for our 'old style', basic, vans. On second thoughts they're full of gadgetry. Cookers, kettles, fancy bottle openers........

Better still, if you already own one of the Pioneer multimedia car systems, CarPlay compatibility can be added with a free firmware upgrade! The same is probably true for existing Alpine multimedia systems, but I haven't checked.

Has anyone fitted a large (double din?) audio unit to their van? I have the standard (single din?) pioneer unit from danbury, and really like the look of some of the CarPlay enabled ones, which all seem to be the bigger size. Can it be done? I had been putting this off for a while, mainly because of cost, but also because of security worries, but this pioneer unit (SPH-DA130DAB) is reasonable (£250) and also has a removable fascia. Just got CarPlay in my car and love it, so would love to get it fitted for the spring.

That's the single DIN one - right? Very clever design. I think I might go for that one, as should just slot into the existing gap. Great to hear you like it. Thanks for the tip.

Essentially scm_101you need to cut a bigger hole in your dash
A view from the back shows my plate I spot welded to the dash in order to screw the stereo to it.
I welded plates in because my dash was out at the time but you could probably support the stereo off the handbrake bracket with less effort.

Great photos, and such a neat job. Thanks. Definitely a job for the spring. Simon.

Some pics of my CarPlay installation. Thanks for all the advice provided above. I went for the PIONEER AVH-Z7200DAB. While the credit card was out, I also got an 8" sub-woofer (fitted under the back seat) sounds great now. Reversing camera is also v welcome.

Great photos of the PIONEER AVH-Z7200DAB. looking at getting one ourselves. Did you need to modify the dashboard at all for the screen to sit properly, and did you need an internal cage to support it?

Which Sony model is it? It obviously fits well in front of the top overhanging of the dash?

This looks really smart and something I'm keen to add to my bus. Quick question; does the screen size block or limit any of the dashboard functions? Can you still open the glove box etc?
Cheers

Our local mechanic fitted the "pop-up" Pioneer multi-media interface. I use an I-Phone and my husband, an Android. It's brilliant! He made a metal support to hold it from behind and we attach the phones via the glove-box. Also added re-view camera for reversing. Very happy!

No problem with the glove box. It is neat but it doesn’t foul it

scm_101 Which reversing camera did you decide? The Panasonic one or something else? Pete

We adjust the hinge on the glovebox at VWK when we fit the Sony units, so they sit slightly to the left - thereby not fouling the screen frame. Brilliant pieces of kit. I love mine.
