PostSubject: Duvets or Sleeping Bags?   Sat Mar 03, 2012 5:57 pm

Hi folks!

I'm a newbie and was just wondering what people go for sleeping bags or duvets in their Kombi?

In my tent, it was always a sleeping bag, but in my new van...I reckon a high tog duvet might be good, however, could prove harder to pack away. Hmmm. Bit of an unusual question but any thoughts are welcome to ensure a perfect nights sleep in my lovely van :-)

Thanks!

Duvet for us - we've never had a problem with warmth though choosing a silk duvet cover has meant for some bedding loss at times!

We always use 3 season "mummy" sleeping bags
Never been cold - even when a frost outside
If too hot sleep in cotton liner on top of sleeping bag
Hope this helps - all the best

I use a double sleeping bag bought from Tescos for about £15 - never too hot, never cold.

We have this Hi-Gear Corrie Double Sleeping bag very good at keeping you warm and a shiny surface so when you turn over the bag stays put.

Duvet for us plus the thin mattress which is really intended for the roof bed.
These fold in half and fit behind the rear seat with everything else on top and squashing them down for storage and travelling.
Most important though is a couple of good pillows.

Double sleeping bag for us, if really cold a light blanket on top, never had any problem being cold even in winter months.

My post got lost (probably got blocked by Scooby's posting exactly at the same time) so here it goes again:

Outwell Countour Double sleeping bag - we got it discounted somewhere 2 years ago - very warm and comfy with "sort of" pillows incorporated in the hood. It can split in two separate ones. We opt for the sleeping bag as it is easier to store it neatly at the back although it takes probably same space as a duvet.

We take a double duvet, which is stored in an ikea bag so that it makes a nice square for storing. Also are inclined to take a sleeping bag to pad out the matress below us at times.

Duvet for us - nothing like making it feel like home - and have a patchwork quilt to go over if it gets really chilly!

We use a duvet although we have used bags in the past, but decent pillows are the key.

Has anyone tried one of those memory foam toppers? I got chatting to a T25 owner in Tesco's car park a while back and she swore by it.

No, but we have quite a thick blanket we use underneath that works quite well.

Duvet with the roof matress on top of the bed for extra comfort. Never had a problem with being too cold.

Whatever we can manage to pack in the van. Although with a 4 and 6 year old there usually isn't much room for anything.

Usually we go with sleeping bags and pillows. Sometimes throw a duvet in - especially for the children in the roof as all we use are two pieces of thick marine ply for tehm to sleep on. Harden them up early is my motto !

With 4 in the van there usually isn't a problem with cold - condensation, now that is another matter. I know, leave windows slightly open, etc but then the cold comes in. There is no perfect solution, but at the end of the day it all comes down to personal comfort and what you can pack in. If you are the sort of person that can sleep anywhere in any circumstances go with sleeping back as it saves space. If you like your home comforts - take a duvet.

Have fun and if you take the duvet - don't moan if your partner pinches it all !!

goose down duvet (light and squashes down to nothing.....excuse pun) and a feather topper. However nowdays our most comfortable sleep is in our bigger than kingsize (queensize?) treble thickness airbed that we put up in the khyam awning.....fabulous and so so comfortable! still use the duvet arrangement!

Double sleeping bag for us, single bags for the kids up in the roof. Works ok but the kids are a bit useless at getting into (and staying in!) the sleeping bags so we're going to try duvets this season.

Having said that, when we rented a van from the Isle of Wight campers (before we bought our own), they provided duvets and I have to say it did add to the homely feel immensely! They were just a bit bulky, but once we arrived we put up our small pop-up tent and the duvets went in there.

In conclusion........as yet undecided!

We use two fleece doble size blankets on the rock and roll bed if its cold. A thick one that we got from Carrefour for about 15 euro which is brilliant and a thin one that we just got from a fabric shop as a 2.5 metre length. Both pack into the pop top space with a youth decathlon sleeping bag that our son uses in the pop top and a childs mufti cotton sleeping bag that the little one uses in the cab hammock.

We also keep a couple of crochet cotton throws from the RnR when upright and a mexican blanket that we use for picnic, sand etc.

We find fleece more practical as we tend to use Daphne for 4 to 5 week periods in one go so hand washing fleece is easier than duvets or double sleeping bags.

One of the joys of having a westy style roof is the ability to use it as storage when down so all our bedding goes up there.

I have been thinking of a memory foam topper for a while as our 3/4 rock n roll bell unfortunately has 3 noticeably different sections, all slightly different levels & angles (many of you will know what I mean).
Not good for a bad back. I am going to try the thin foam matress that I had made for the kids in the pop top.
I'll feed back after easter.
