- Hello Everyone...
I wanted to make everyone aware, be it airbus or aquabay, about aftermarket or different steering wheels...Did anyone know that an original or aftermarket steering wheel for a 1974 - to 1979 bay window is a direct fit to your brazilian baywindow...I have just ordered an 18" wooden rimmed steering wheel with polished centre and pre-drilled steering boss from Van Wurks Ltd(www.vanwurks.co.uk) click on interiors or call 0161-637-4882...It costs £159.95 with £10 p&p and is absolutely gorgeous and well worth the money...Steering wheels from Just Kampers or Vw Heritage etc dont come with a steering boss and work out far more expensive...
Cheers peppa
http://www.vanwurks.co.uk/e107_plugins/e107shop/product_details.php?product=46&cat=2 My caution would be that the Brazilian Steering wheel is heavily padded. There is no airbag, but in a smash your head would at least sustain less nasty injuries that with a very solid steering wheel. Its personal choice at the end of the day.

| I'm thinkig if a smash is that bad I'd be more worried about my legs, not much protection there at all. ________________________________________________________________________________ Ginger man without a ginger van | |

| Had a look online and it looks good..only one thing its 18inches in dia, that seems smaller that whats on Olive now so would that make the turning of the wheel harder than it already is? | |

I try not to think about a crash especially when the needle hits 80 with a strong cross wind

- Hi everyone...
I think the important point to remember is that if we wanted airbags, abs, side impact bars and any other safety features then we would not be owning or driving our buses, we would own T4's or T5's...
I use mine everyday to take the kids to school and its our main daily driver...If i thought about every possible chance of an accident then i would have to sell it...
Peppa oh dear, didn't mean to stir things up - I think the Brazilian Steering wheel is cool myself - like I say - personal choice whether you like it, or want a hard replacement one.

| Did the van works steering wheel fit easily?
I'm looking at the same thing, a wooden steering wheel, but not sure the exact logistics of buying one and having it fitted?
Danbury charge £499 for wheel, labour to fit it and boss. If I buy a wheel for £159-200, will I also need a boss? How much are they? And will I also need someone to fit it, therefore, pay for labour?
Just wondering, if having Danbury do it is roughly the same cost overall????
Advice very welcome.
Thanks. | |

| Danbury get their steering wheels from MCJ. You need a boss to fit a Brazilian Kombi specifically. Very easy to fit if you have access to a socket set. ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay | |

| Here's a slightly alarming little tale for you...
I had a wooden steering wheel fitted by Danbury at the end of May. It started to feel a bit wobbly October time last year so they authorised me to take it to a local garage for a safety check. The steering wheel had actually worked its way completely loose. It just lifted off. It's been back to Danbury for another service since and they haven't been able to offer any explanation as to what caused this. The local garage reckons it's to do with the lowered suspension and 17" wheels causing extra strain but Danbury were dismissive of this. They said they'd not had any other issues like this. But maybe this is cos not many people have the steering wheel/fat rims combo?
Be interested to hear others' opinions on what might have caused it.

| Ours is lowered and we have Danburys wooden steering wheel and we've not had any issues. ________________________________________________________________________________ Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder

| Sounds a bit extreme to blame it on the wheel/suspension combo. Was the garage you took it to a VW specialist? ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay | |

| No, I took it to the nearest garage! Worried about losing the wheel en route! I have to say the steering is lighter now it's been reattached properly. Maybe it just wasn't installed properly in the first place, the steering was very heavy before, it was a full on arm workout parking her! | |

| As you say, maybe it wasn't tightened enough on the original install... ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay | |

| There is a heavy duty spring washer behind the nut make sure it's there. You can just see it at the bottom of this picture with the nut. This needs to be tight enough to compress the spring washer in order to keep the nut from loosening. | |

| Sunny is now sporting a nice wooden steering wheel. Only problem is, I now want to do some thing with the dash to make it look better and match the wheel. | |

| Brilliant. What colour wheel did you go for?
I think having the dash painted to match Sunny's orange would look great. ________________________________________________________________________________ Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder
