Securing driveaway awning to T2 Brazilian gutter rail

I have recently purchased a figure of 8 adapter to slid onto the end of my awning and the gutter rail on our van. The figure of 8 does not fix to the gutter rail so doesn't really work. Any ideas what produce I will need to do so securely??

It depends on whether the awning has a sleeve to slide the pole through. If so, pole and clamp is definitely the best method. We also have a canopy which has beading for figure of eight but no sleeve. I have cut notches in the figure of eight so that I can use clamps and short pieces of tube to secure it to the gutter, because otherwise any gust of wind will blow it off.

Most of the distance is the Vango pole and clamp, but having a roof rack on the front, the pole is too long to fit and won't go behind the roof rack, so is doubled back on itself in the canopy sleeve just behind the roof rack. The piece of the canopy between the feet of the roof rack is attached by a piece of figure of eight, with a metal tent peg in the end to ensure it stays put!

Goodness bumble. Belts and braces. We've used both (at different times) to connect our vango kela. Both have worked well but pole snd coamp feels more secure if windy

Hi Alan @voyager , don't suppose you have any pictures of your figure of eight attachment mechanism do you ? The new canopy we bought only has the Kador strip to attach to figure of eight and am scratching my head how to best attach it to the van.  I have attached it once and even in moderate wind the figure of eight wasn't up to the job

Hi Beakyboy, A while back I had a project where I wanted to be able to have a temporary attachment for a sun shade without having to put up the roof. You can get lengths of webbing with a bead down one edge. I just sewed the webbing into a tube so that the pole would slide through, and the figure of 8 attached to that. Presumably it would work in reverse, with the pole in the gutter, and the beading attached to your canopy figure of 8

What about getting a length of standard awning rail and clamping it to the gutter using the pole clamps. Tim

Here you go. I have cut notches at the ends of the figure of eight with a hacksaw. I also have a long piece of figure of eight, courtesy of Tony Taylor, in which I have cut notches at each end and one in the middle. I position the figure of eight on the gutter, place short pieces of metal tube in the gutter behind the notches, and then clamp down both figure of eight and tube with pole clamps.

Sorry @dizzylizard missed your post , yes I really like the idea of making a sleeve and then using the pole and clamp, will try and find some webbing with a bead straight away. I don't suppose you remember where you sourced yours from do you?

Can't remember exactly where I got it from BB, but this is the sort of thing, if you search 'single edged sew on kador strip' in google, there should be other suppliers that do similar. (not sure if you can get the beading in 6mm and 7mm, so worth checking the size of your figure of eight)

So DL your response got me thinking.... Suddenly I remembered our first sun canopy that had seen much better days and was doubling as a cycle cover due to it being ripped... I knew it had a pole and clamp sleeve but i also recalled it having the kador strip. So once home from work and into the bike shed I located the canopy and yes there it was exactly as I’d hoped. I therefore cut away the canopy leaving me a pole and clamp sleeve with a sewn in Kador strip. I should now be able to connect the sleeve to the canopy using the figure of eight adapter and then pole and clamp it to the van. As me old mate Daz always says “jobs a good un”

The job has to include pop rivets before it can be considered a good 'un!

I was prompted by a discussion at Camperjam to post the details of the company that provided the kit and instructions to fit an awning rail - on the roof above the gutter and just below where the pop top canvas joins the tin top.  So with the top down it's invisible and when in use, provides clearance above the sliding door!

The awning rail at the bottom of the poptop really does make a dofference for head height, also makes the awning a better fit too
