Toying with the idea of having a TV fitted in Absinthe but not sure whether it's worth it.

Do those of you who have one use it a lot, how is reception? Should I bother (they ain't cheap!)

I've got one

Doesn't get loads of use - don't seem to have the time

Got a DVD player in with the TV which I probably use more

Reception wise there have been places where there is no chance of a signal - Northern Sleepovers!

We do - it's a godsend with young children on wet days!

Like you Abs would like a built in one but not sure about the expense either...
I do have a portable with built in freeview and brought an aerial booster which worked well on the one occasion I used it during the Olympics.

I bought a 19" TV with freeview and DVD in Tesco last month for about £80. I'm planning to take it along as a separate unit when we go away in the summer. At least it can then be hidden away when not in use and brought inside during the winter.

Bought one of these from Amazon. It's tiny and I was very doubtful it would work but I tried it in the house and it picked up 30 odd channels including digital radio! It has the added benefit of a nice long cable so I plan to pop a sucker on the base and stick it to the roof.

We have the same/similar, a portable laptop style DVD player with built in Freeview and an aerial/booster, but tbh we use it mainly for playing the odd DVD rather than for TV.

I tend to agree with irishman over this ... surely you head off in your BraziBay to 'get away' from it all. iPhone/iPad to keep a degree in touch, but full on telly? Regardless, if you've got Sky Go or TV Catchup on your iPad then you shouldn't need a telly.

Digital TV reception lousy - except in the Hebrides strangely, we use it mainly for DVD watching on wet days but there are much cheaper options for doing that

Tim I'm not sure you can go as far as:

Obviously you don't but it's possible that others may do?

I'm not sure I do but given the number of days away we have and the inclement weather we face up here on occasions, it might be nice in the evening to hunker down and watch a bit of tv in bed. Each to their own...

We are usually out ALL day walking / cycling so I tend to agree that it's good sometimes to veg after dinner, Great to watch a DVD in bed.

Built in TV with DVD, along with separate AV input (so can watch footage from camera/video cameras). The fixed aerial provides variable signal quality, as campsites tend to be in not the best reception areas. To overcome this I also have a separate aerial input by the EHU point, to cater for those sites that provide a satellite/TV feed.

Great addition Smile

We have a Linsar 15 inch Freeview TV and DVD (model 16LVD5) which is excellent for easy setup of the re-tune needed when moving to a new location.
This fits in the buddy-seat alongside the Portaloo when not in use.
This STH1000 aerial can 'see' through the canvas pop-top. It is a directional aerial so needs to be pointed towards the signal. Either by trial and error or using transmitter info from the web

Freeview reception can be difficult or not available in some locations - just the DVD's then.
The satellite based FreeSat sytem with a dish aerial might ensure TV is available anywhere - if you want to spend fiddle time setting up the dish.

Has anyone had success with running 12V TVs off leisure battery (rather than using with electric hook up)?

Yep, our Meos portable DVD/TV player has it's own battery and a 12v (cigarette lighter) lead to connect to leisure battery using one of the 12v (cigarette lighter) sockets that I added a while ago.

Great - thanks. Think I will get one (Sorry Tim and Irishman, I love a bit of telly!) Ideally a 50 inch one running off 12v leisure battery!!

Sunny - did someone install yours for you or did you do it yourself?

No, the good folk at Danbury did it for me, as it entailed cutting holes in the headlining etc. I just let them know what I wanted and they did it all for me.

Abs our amplified booster is very similar to this and we easily pick up 30 freeview channels with it...

Have looked at 12V TVs on Amazon -there are different sizes and they use different amounts of energy
ie 19 inch (3 amp 36 watts), 22 inch (1.9 amp 22 watts) 24 inch (3 amp 32 watts).

Does anyone know if leisure battery can cope with this - 22 inch one looks best.

The standard fridge is ~45w therefore almost 4A so that will give you an idea of battery life with TV use.

Just looked at the spec of our little Meos unit and found the following:

Internal battery (lasts approx 1hr) charges at 1.2A (15w) when the unit is plugged in but not in use.

It also states that it charges at the lower rate on 0.4A (5w) when it is in use (TV/DVD switched on) which suggests the TV/DVD itself uses 10w.

Admittedly, ours is only a 11.3" unit, but it suits our needs and can be tided away very easily in its 'transport bag'. It also includes a bracket to attach to the rear of a car head rest which means we can use it in either vehicle or in fact anywhere else we want to.
