PostSubject: 12v USB Adapter   Fri Jun 13, 2014 4:35 pm

Is anyone successfully using a USB adapter plugged into the cigarette lighter socket to charge phones, iPods, satnavs etc? Neither of the USB adapters I've tried will work, and they both work fine in our Audi and VW cars. Maybe I need to try a different adapter, or perhaps I've just got a dodgy cigarette lighter socket. I've checked the fuse and that's OK. The light on the adapter will come on momentarily if I move it around, but it won't hold securely in place.

The cigarette lighter on the BraziBay isn't particularly deep so if whatever you're plugging in has a long/heavy connector, then these tend to make crap contact.  Best bet it to buy one of these:

Griffin USB charger

because it's a short reach and stays securely in the socket.  At least that's what I've found.   Basketball

Incidentally, you have checked that the cig lighter actually heats up, thereby proving the socket is working properly?

Thanks Tim, I'll give that one a try. The cigarette lighter doesn't work, it just pushes in and stays there, I had to prise it out again. However, the light on the USB adapter does come on, it's just that I have to move it around until I get a contact, and it goes out again as soon as I let go of it. I think it's worth sporting a fiver anyway before I start going down the route of replacing the socket.

Until I bought the Griffin unit, I used to use a load of blue tack along the rim of the 12v socket to hold whichever plug in place. Did the trick, but aesthetically it did nothing for me!  Basketball

I've found that the JK cupholder, which sits in the ashtray, does a very good job of keeping my Nokia car charging adaptor, with additional usb slot, very neatly in place. Smile

Danbury took out my cig lighter at the last service and replaced it with a more robust 12v socket which works properly to charge devices.

Apparently the cig lighter socket is meant to be just that and not for charging other things.
