PostSubject: TO LOW....OR NOT TO LOW....THAT IS THE QUESTION?   Sun Jul 13, 2014 5:27 pm

Need some help with an 11 plate kombi.
at the moment it runs on the original steel wheels and 15 inch tyres...we want to put on to it some alloys...

so can we only put on 15inch alloys and tyres without changing the suspension?

or can we put on 17inch alloys and tyres without affecting the running gear and ability such as speedo etc...

if we decide to keep the alloys at 15 inch then will the tyres that are on the steel wheels at the moment go straight on to the 15 inch alloys? or do we have to get new tyres for the new alloys?

Also, any other help on this subject would be appreciated.
pros and cons of 15 inch v 17 inch ...and other possible sizes etc...
thank you.

You cannot fit the standard tyres on alloys. Period.

You can fit 15" alloys with 88 and higher load rated tyres without lowering the Kombi - this is what I have done. If you use a tyre wall size of 65 rather than the usual 60 this fills the wheel arch better.

I've no experience of a non lowered Kombi with the 17" alloys but regardless you will get a much harsher ride - as you would in a car by fitting bigger alloys - and the risk of rim damage is far greater when you go off-road into campsites, fields etc. The 17s look stunning but imo they aren't practical.

I think you'll find the standard steels are 14 inch, if you get 14 inch alloys then you can use the same tyres.

Standard, regardless of what size wheels you have - the faster you go the greater the variation. If you're concerned about speed limits use a mobile sat nav app. I know for certain that from 50 mph up the speedo on my BraziBay will show 10 mph more than the vehicle is actually travelling.

Certainly gets a bit scary after 60mph indicated - not for the feint hearted ,that's for sure! - In any case why would you want to go faster the idea is to sit back - relax and experience "hippyness"-
