Michel I've updated the title of your post to Rear Wheel Carrier as that's more descriptive of what the unit is.

Hi Michel. This is a Danbury product that fits the rear of the car and hold the spare wheel and tyre so you have extra space inside the car. Please PM (message) me for availability. Very Happy

Yes Dennis, the brackets started flaking paint,  so I did a temporary clean-up, and painted them with rust killer and smooth hammerite until I can do a permanent job in the spring.

Powder coating would be just the job.

We had problems with the first one fitted to Absinthe. Every time it rained it leached dirty brown water down the back of the van. Fortunately Danbury replaced it at the first or second service - apparently it was faulty and not properly sealed. We've not had any issues since.

Interesting. Georgy's wheel carrier is really really rusty - and lots of flaking. Unfortunately it wasn't replaced Sad
Powder coating is a new one on me - will have to look it up.....

Rear mounted or tow bar mounted bike racks can be an issue if you have the rear external wheel carrier although there is a '4x4' version of the MaxxRaxx bike rack that we have, that is designed specifically for use along side a rear wheel carrier.

Bought ours 2nd hand on EBay from a guy who had used it for a trip to France the year before on his T5.

Ours too, and it's only 3 years old. I'm not impressed really.

I certainly wouldn't put the wheel inside the van. We have a Rio layout with wardrobe, and we like having the storage space. If we didn't have a wardrobe I would rather have a wider bed than share the van with a wheel. If I didn't have a spare wheel carrier I would prefer to put the spare wheel on the roof rack.

Hi Michel, it's still been raining here all day, so I sat in the warm and have done some measurements for you.  Smile

It might give you some ideas if you and your friends want to design your own spare wheel carrier.

You may need to make your own pattern so that it fits properly.

I've been thinking about the issue of the carrier rusting - which seems a common problem - and there are lots of water traps and flat areas for water to sit which must surely be simple to improve on with a bit of a redesign, or by using different materials in key places.

Since the carrier seems to be rusting so quickly I assume that the steel is not galvanised. That would probably be the simplest solution, and at minimal cost to the manufacturing process.

Pity the carrier can't be made out of aluminium. Lightweight and no corrosion issues.

It probably could be although would need extra strength in places.
