PostSubject: Hello and pop up roof advice please.    Mon Mar 23, 2015 9:04 pm

Hi Everyone,

We are new to here. We are in the process of buying a Brazilian VW bay (very excited). It's great to see all the chat going on here about them. Hopefully once we've bought it fully we will post a pic (some of you may recognised it!).

It currently doesn't have a pop up roof and we would like to put one on. Could anyone recommend a good place to do this anywhere near Reading/slough/Bracknell?

We also have lots of questions about which type of pop up to go for, but we'll leave that question till next time!

Thanks, Lori and Al

Hi Lori and Al, welcome!

I think I know the BraziBay you're giving a new home to! Wink

It's a choice of 2 essentially: a Danbury poptop or a Spaceroof. The former is what the vast majority of Kombis here are fitted with, the latter is a more traditional 'Westfalia' styled roof. You'll need to travel to both companies for them to fit the roof for you though.

TimV,

Thanks for the speedy response. This seems to be a really helpful, friendly forum, just what we need being complete amateurs!

Is there any common knowledge about the advantages or disadvantages to the style of pop roof? (angle, shape etc) We are hoping to use it as a bed for our baby, as well as extra head room when parked up.

Many thanks!

Lori and Al

The Danbury roof is 'square' in so much as it lifts by approx 50cm front and back creating a space the length of the van that is 50cm high and approx a metre wide with the roof board/bed in place. With the bed folded back it gives in excess of 2 metres of head room in the central area and a further 'storage' area on top of the folded bed board.

The Spaceroof overall dimensions are similar in width and length however it raises at only one end and lifts higher. Not sure if thebed board works in the same or similar way, but there will be a Brazi Panel van with Spaceroofs pop top and 4 regular Brazis with Danbury pop tops (including Tallulah) on the Brazilian VW Bay stand at VolksWorld this Sunday if you wanted to come and take a look.

Hi and welcome to the forum Lori and Al.

I haven't any personal experience of these cab bunk beds for little ones, but may be worth a thought. My only concern would be some sort of bolster between the headrests to prevent any mishaps. Several companies make them specifically for T2s

I think that you will find that the structure of the Westfalia type roof allows for a higher weight limit which would support two adults. I think that the Danbury roof has a weight limit of about 18 stones or 115Kg.

Hi Tallulah, Dizzylizard, Alderley,

Thank you so much for your thoughts. We wish we could be at Volksworld this Sunday, it would be incredibly useful, but sadly we are away.

Re: the roofs, thanks for your ideas. We're just trying to get a sense of what is reliable, i.e.. won't leak, and what is the best for a baby and some storage.

We're collecting our van next monday. Very excited!

Thanks, Al and Lori

Hi Lori and Al, and welcome.
Space roofs are also exhibiting at Volksworld this weekend so you can have a good chat to Pete and compare his poptops to the Danbury version.
Edit - you posted just before me. Scrap that idea!

I seem to remember that dazdub has a cab bunk in his van. The roof bed is quite high, so you would have to be careful that your baby couldn't fall out. Maybe a safety bar or net would be needed. We don't use the bed board in our van, since we only use the roof for storage. I adapted an idea from lilyvdub by using two wardrobe rails with a cloth stretcher between them to make a hammock arrangement for storage, which would be equally useful for a baby bed.

Neither should leak, I'm not aware of anyone with a leaky roof other than a couple that have external (surfboard) rails fitted to a Danbury roof, and even if they did a new installation will come with a warranty. The only way to be sure is to look at both. You suggested "anywhere near Reading/slough/Bracknell" area in your first post, we're in (Central/West) Reading and you are welcome to come and meet Tallulah to peruse her pop-top (Danbury) at any time if it helps.

For any roof that you consider, if it has an opening roof-light it is worth considering if it could be opened in the rain without letting in water.
Some designs shield the rain even when open to give some valuable ventilation.
Also consider the overall height for garages and barriers.

Hi Lorry,

Welcome

My advice is whoever you get to do your roof, get the price and a list of what is included in writing before you sign on the dotted line.

Welcome to the forum, if it's the van I am thinking of that was recently for sale on here, it's a beaut!

Don't forget our main yearly club get together 'The Kombi sleepover' is in Banbury the weekend 29th to 31st May, a great chance to meet everyone.

Evening Lori & Al and welcome we have a westy style roof fitted by Pete at Space roofs, (pete's company have been making these roofs) and vw camper conversions for years and we love it..
its based on the the late 70"s rear hinged westfalia camper conversion. It will easily take 2 six footers
The other thing to consider is the large front canvas window with built in mosquito net-wonderful on a hot summers night!! and you also get useful storage for your awning in the front top box!!
hope this helps

The Space Roofs westy style weld in a steel structure back into the roof for strengthening once the roof is cut.

Danbury's pop top is fixed in place with wood which has been fibreglassed to the original metal roof.

Personally I like the look and functionality of the Danbury Roof but would have liked it with the build ethic of the Space Roofs one.

I think you also need to consider ease of putting away. I find the Danbury roof a right faff to put down (but easy to pop up); I don't know if spaceroofs are any better.

Hi and welcome to the Brazi bunch!
We are 6 months old but feel like we have been part of the family for much longer.
I personally in the relatively few times we have used our pop up have found it the worst aspect of owning Bumble. It is not too much trouble putting it up but a real malarkey and fiddle to "pop" ..ha ha.. down.
See if you can try some out first before you choose.

Hi and welcome as well.

I'm with the other when they say the Danbury roof is a faff to put dow, I'm not too keen on the look of the Danbury roof either. Saying that I'm still yet to see a Spaceroof so can't really compare

Thanks everyone,
Its great to have all this good advice and reassuring to know the van is known as a good one. The meet up sounds great. Unfortunately we're already away on the Banbury Sleepover but hopefully they'll be more?
We have a couple more questions. I'll put these under a different heading.
Thanks
Lori and Al

Does anyone know how much it costs to change from Danbury popup to a space roof?

According to their website to fit a Spaceroof is £2950 from scratch. If a pop top is already fitted it's £3100, the extra cost is for disposal of the original

......or you could ask them to keep hold of the old roof and sell it.
