PostSubject: must have items for camping   Thu May 21, 2015 2:05 pm

Hi Guys

the Mrs has been drinking I think and suggested stepping up from day use/fun van to a few nights in bumble

does anyone have a list of must have items from experience as I'm not a camper!

we have a very small lead to plug into the socket in the back it goes into a normal plug I use it for charging the leisure battery and getting the fridge cold but I don't think its a hook up, apart from a kettle (unused and no gas bottle!!) and a just kampers dining set that's all we have Smile

2 adults 3 kids 7 yrs -4 yrs -14 months so assume an awning or cab bunk as minimum - we have pop top already,

also does anyone put anything on the seats or do you just use sleeping bags?

very basic beginner questions I'm sure!!

all input appreciated

Ray

Ray,

The following post has lots of info:

Equipment for a beginner

And I'll get you started:

Sounds like you need a decent hookup cable to start with. Get yourself a 25m one as there are a few sites where the hookup stand is a short distance from the actual pitch. I got one from Amazon for around £20 including a bag, but don't be tempted by cheaper EBay offers as the quality might not be all that.

Do you have a travel cot for your youngest? With any luck this will fit into the space between the bed and front seats and will solve your issue of a 5th berth, at least for now.

We have a thick blanket that we lay over the seats/bed and put a regular bed sheet on top of that along with a duvet. Our son uses a sleeping bag in the roof although we sometimes take a duvet for him too as it can get cold up top.

You will need a gas bottle if you plan to cook anything inside, a '907' is what you need and can be found on most campsites as well as various other places. If you want to save some money try to find an empty one for sale locally - we got one for £10 on Gumtree - otherwise the first will cost you £70+ with refills at about £25.

I also recommend getting some levelling ramps and chocks along with a bi-directional spirit level. Having a level bed make such a HUGE difference for a good nights sleep although with 3 excited youngsters on board it will probably be a while before you get one of those!

25m hook up cable, leveling chocks, grey water container, sunshade (you most probably want an awning with 3 children), small bin and bin bags, windbreaks, electric kettle, gas kettle, 907 camping gas bottle, outside table, chairs, matches for cooker, kitchen bits(pots, pans, cutlery, can opener, plates, bread knife etc), tea coffee sugar, flag pole, flags, solar lights, bunting, tea towel, washing up stuff, mallet, dustpan and brush, mirror, kichen towel, clothes pegs, string for washing line,........thats generally always in the van off top of my head.
If you do get an awning for the children, airbeds, pump, lanterns, batteries.

You'll figure it out, the rest of us do it all the time so it can't be that hard!

The first few times you head out you will be carrying far too much, but over time you will unload bits and pieces that rarely get used until you are left with your core camping essentials. By then everything will have a home within the van too.

Eventually, you will start adding specific things back in based on expected weather, locations visited and anticipated activities and the whole process starts over!

It's all part of the fun of kombi ownership, enjoy!!

You'll need something from this thread eventually: When you run out of space in your van

We use compression bags for things like towels and duvets. It takes up a third of the space and keeps everything nice and dry.

Corkscrew.  You can afford to forget anything else, but forget the corkscrew and it is game over!

What we have done over the years is each time we come back from a camping trip we take out the things we've not used. The theory being of course, we are just left with the basic essentials, however, we still seem to take loads of 'stuff'.
My essentials if going anywhere near the sea, which is nearly always, is to take my fishing stuff, that way I can always bring home food for the table...........

Aldi are in camping mode again this week, and have 44litre dry bags. One will take a double duvet and two pillows.

A bottle opener. Beer will get you through a lack of camping equipment better than camping equipment will get you through a lack of beer.

Totally agree, our first Kombi modification was to fit a bottle opener above the fridge so that can never happen!!
