| So moving to the country has obviously had an effect on my brain and I've got the idea of adding a puppy/dog to our family in my head! We have never had a dog and I've never considered it before now.
We would be looking for quite a small breed, if we were to have one.
I was wondering if any of you Kombi dog families out there could provide advice on travelling with and camping with a dog. What should I know before we make this big decision? Even if you think it's something really obvious, please share, as I say we have never had a dog before and realise it's a huge commitment so want to be as sure/prepared as we can.
Thanks | |

| Probably not starting with a Great Dane might be good advice... ________________________________________________________________________________ Timmm

| Weve got a little Border Terrier which we've had for years, she absolutely loves our kombi, personally we find it easy as she has a little bed between the seats when we travel and her size is no problem at all for us when we bed down for the night. Plenty of other Kombi owners have dogs that travel with them, Id say just be aware that some breeds are a bit more boisterous and need walking more than others... ________________________________________________________________________________ Timmm

| How exciting - go for it ! Our Kombi's are ideal for sharing with a K9 companion, you've only got to look around at the sleepover to see how many of us bring them along. We love taking Barney camping with us and he really enjoys it too. Whilst we are travelling he lies down on the floor of the van. He's not a 'wanderer' so he doesn't disturb me when I'm driving but a crate might be better for a smaller breed. The main couple of things you need to consider are where they are going to sleep and what happens during the day when you're around and about on your pitch. Barney sleeps in the van with us and has a blanket on the floor in front of the rock and roll bed - he's more than happy there. Some people use a dog crate and that works well too. During the day we use a screw in dog spike to stop him wandering. Most campsites require you to keep your dog on a lead at all times. Another thing to consider is who'll look after him/her when you go on the Kaper ( assuming you'll not bring them). We've found some great home boarding now but it wasn't easy and is expensive. | |

| As long as you are prepared for the puppy stage of owning a dog - wee/poomats, doggy socialising, training (I think our Ted missed this bit) then there is no reason you shouldn't have a dog to travel with. Puppies do have immature inner ears which can be a problem and cause travel sickness but they should grow out of this and best get the puppy used to travelling as soon as possible. We had a break from dog ownership after our Airedale died ten years ago but not long after we bought our Camper we decided a dog was a must have and in fact bought our Lakeland terrier from Cornwall whilst camping there - the wife had seen an ad in a local paper from a kennels she'd recognised while looking for a dog online at home in Kent - it was fate. Some things to consider - getting a small breed is easier to manage in and around the van, at night Ted sleeps on the passenger seat, he would get out of the awning as he is too nosey. A breed that doesn't moult as you don't want hairy bedding, seats etc. There are plenty of dog friendly campsites and usually pubs nearby will also be dog friendly - we have not been to many where dogs are not allowed and have also been into restaurants, as Ted is small he sits out of site under the table - he is well behaved having been into many pubs. But you do need to know that you will be a bit restricted. On campsites dogs have to be on leads - we have a nylon wire tethered to a screw in peg which are great, Ted chewed through his normal lead before we got this and went awoke for a while! Most of the time he travels in a fold up travel kennel but he does like to sit up front on the wife's lap and watch all the people smiling and waving at us! Plenty of other members have dogs on the forum and I am sure will agree that they are a must have accessory!

| Thanks for the replies. Certainly nothing there to scare me off too much!
We probably wouldn't get one until later in year, after Kaper, as not sure I'd want to leave it so soon anyway.

| non moulting, non smelling, suitable size, leg length to suit amount of time available to exercise, good natured breed as so many people will want to look a the van you don't want to terrify them away (or maybe you do!) |

Great advice - could apply to seeking a partner as well - I managed to find one who ticked most of those boxes. ________________________________________________________________________________ "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave"

| Possibly a little change in plan, after saying we would wait until after Kaper, we are now visiting a French Bulldog on Thursday that needs rehoming! | |

| Sounds like I'm too late to influence you! I hope that you find the perfect travel buddy.
We have an older dog who prefers to sit in passenger's lap. This is a bit annoying on longer journeys. Our puppy knows nothing but the camping life. She sits or lies happily on the buddy seat, watching the world go by.
If that french bulldog comes home with you, get lots of 'practice' journeys in (not that anyone needs an excuse to get out in their Kombi!) | |
