Subject: Solar power for my fridge Mon Jun 22, 2020 12:22 pm
Hello everyone. I have a Daisy too. I have just been reading new owner Gavinskis post about his Daisy. When I go to festivals, which in the pre covid days was as many as I could fit into the summer, I struggled with the Fridge. No electrical hook up. No fridge basically. I saw a few people with solar panels to power the fridge and lights and heater, but never met another VW Type 2 owner who had done this. Has anyone done this? Can you recommend someone who could advise me? Thank you so much. I would like to meet up with a few fellow owners so am checking out the meets. bye for now Lynn x

There are a few threads on the forum about this topic, including posts by members who have done this. Try using the search function in the bar at the top of the screen to find topics containing the word "solar". This should give you lots of information, and no doubt scope for further questions.

Hi Lynn (and fellow Daisy owner - although mine may go through deed-poll for a new ID since I removed the stickers!)
The previous owner removed the stock fridge and fitted a 3 way fridge. This means it can be powered by the leisure battery, hook up or by bottled gas - however in my case he bought an underslung LPG refillable tank - so I can be off the grid with chilled food / beer / wine in all seasons without being light dependant!!
I did however have solar fitted to my previous VW California, which was great for the summer months.

Hi Daisy, both surfwagenstan and Bumble have fitted solar panels to the roof of the van and, in Bumble's case, just run the fridge and lighting from the solar panels now.
We had the same problem - going to festivals and having no hook-up, so no fridge. So, with guidance from surfwagenstan, I fitted ours two years ago. Last spring, we went to a festival and camped there for six nights in all, with the fridge running all the time and not running out.
The other benefiit from the solar panels is the fact that Bumble started first time after six days of not moving on the campsite.
We've now not used our EHU for over two years, saving a couple of pounds a night each night we camp.
