MCJ Steering wheel fit Empty
PostSubject: MCJ Steering wheel fit   MCJ Steering wheel fit EmptyThu Dec 27, 2012 5:35 pm

Here is how I fitted my MCJ Steering wheel and boss.

Tools required:
2.5mm,3mm Allen key
8mm spanner
Trim removal tool or screwdriver covered in tape
24mm socket and small extension and ratchet
Flat blade screwdriver.

First make sure your steering wheel is in the staight ahead position with steering lock off.

Next using the trim removal tool pry up the original horn push. You can see from the photo there are 5 tabs that need releasing, it does come off fairly easily.

Next you need to release the inner plastic bit with the elongated hole in it which you can see from the previous photo. I used a trim tool placed in the hole in order to pry it up from the bottom first it is held in with the surrounding rubber from the steering wheel itself. There is a locating lug at the top this is why you pry from the bottom once half way out, it should pop right out.

Disconnect the two spade terminals on the back of this piece once removed.

You should now see the 24mm nut at the bottom of the steering wheel as shown. Using a 24mm socket with extension hold the steering wheel and undo the nut it is not on very tight and the spring which is below the wheel helps it come off.

Your steering wheel should now come free make sure the white plastic washer stays on over the spring.

You now need to turn it over and using some screwdrivers or trim removal tools to pry the contact ring off the bottom of the steering wheel. Pry first from where the long piece goes into the steering wheel with the black wire attached to it. Once released you can just guide the cable with insulated spade connector through the hole in the steering wheel. The contact ring should now be free.

This contact ring needs to be fitted to the bottom of the new boss supplied by MCJ. Firstly using a 2.5mm allen key release the horn push from the new boss undo a few turns and it should just lift out, you will have a bag with bolts and a short piece of wire inside remove these.

The contact ring with wire, needs the wire feeding through the hole in the new boss then the long plastic portion of the plastic ring, finally the middle needs a reasonable amout of force with your fingers to push onto the new boss.

Here it is pushed onto the new boss.

You can refit the new boss back onto the steering column now the black tab which sticks up(can be seen in previous photo) is the indicator canceling trigger this goes on the right hand side and the hole which you put your 2.5mm allen key in to remove the horn push should be at the 6 o'clock postion. You will need to compress the spring, align the splines and put the 24mm nut and washer on with your other hand. Once hand tight you can hold the boss and tighten with the ratchet and socket.

I connected the spade terminal to the new horn push then positioned it straight and tightened the 2.5mm allen key.

The exciting bit, next place your steering wheel on the boss lining up the holes. The bag of bolts that you removed from inside the boss previously are used to secure the wheel to the boss. There are 6x M5 Allen key button head bolts 6x M5 nyloc nuts and 6x spring washers. I also used some stainless steel M5 washers before the spring washer and nut so not to mark the boss (NOTE these are not supplied with the MCJ kit) Fit all the bolts and washers and nuts before tightening anything up and use a cross pattern the same you would do with your wheel bolts. (A top tip is to hold the bolts with a 3mm allen key and tighten the nuts with a 8mm spanner as the underside of the bolts can gouge the metal if turned and will be seen, this is why I added the washer to the back so the spring washer wouldn't bite into the aluminium boss)

I also removed the horn push again once the wheel was tight to the boss in order to check the tightness of the 24mm nut as you have more purchase on the bolt with holding the steering wheel than just the boss itself.

The wheel is now complete, time to go on a test drive which funnily enough I haven't done yet Very Happy

I forgot to mention I didn't need to use the short piece of wire included within the MCJ boss the original wire from the contact ring was long enough. However I don't think it was original to the bus might of been repaired at some point in previous life.

The washers I used were from SCREWFIX part no 29763 £1.01 for pk of 100 so plenty spare Very Happy

Thanks to this thread, I just took the horn push off Bumble and got it to work again cheers

It had stopped working for some reason, last time we were out!

(actually I didn't need to do anything other than take the boss off and test the horn!)
