PostSubject: Portable fan   Mon Jul 10, 2017 7:15 pm

Having had a precursor of how hot it's going to be overnight in France at Camperjam over the weekend, I'm starting to think a portable fan might be useful.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Can you get them with a thermostat so that they only kick in when it's really hot?

This is the one I got

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00J68FEIA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It clips very nicely to the shelf I installed above the bed on the upper bed rail. I believe you gave me the dimensions of the one you had fitted by Danbury. I found it works very well. It does not have any thermostatic control but when I use it its so hot the temperature wouldn't drop low enough to switch it off. I do however have a 13 amp socket with thermostat control that I use with my heater and suppose you could utilize that.

might be suitable

We have a couple of small USB fans and we use one of these when it's really warm:

I think we'd struggle with a Ventlock because of the spare wheel carrier. I wouldn't want to leave it unclipped overnight.

We have a little clip on fan like the one shown in the photo. I would say 'don't over think the problem'. If you are in France in the summer on a campsite you are going to have lots of windows/doors open. We have a roof light which helps but a simple fan works fine. Our one has a pull/push switch to turn on movement. It swings through an arc to move the air better.

(We have never left the tail gate open)

I got one of these early on, thinking I could use it in the winter to defrost the side windows, and in the summer as a cooling fan, but on both counts it was pretty useless Rolling Eyes

These seem pretty popular, a bit more expensive than ebay, but can be delivered in days rather than weeks from China.

And with a step down transformer or plug would run off a hook-up.

Not got a fan but have an adjustable bar that locks the tailgate open by about four inches at the bottom and allows a thru breeze with windows and roof light open.

I think that's the Ventlock principal but wouldn't work with our spare wheel.

For each of the examples shown so far, isn't what you're essentially doing it moving the warm air around the van (and just providing a breeze)?

I can't see where the cooling comes from?

I needed to use T on my regular school run during the recent hot weather. There was no breeze and the kids were melting in the back so I turned on the fridge, propped the door open and placed one of our small fans in the freezer box.

Improvised air con, although only if the fridge is otherwise empty!!

You can get a 12v evaporative cooler fan which you fill with cold water or ice on ebay, but I didn't suggest it earlier, as some had reported they can leak.

We usually put the front windows down at night in France, with the screen cover on so no one can tell. I was thinking of getting a couple of those plastic guards that fit in to allow air for pets left in cars for a bit more security.
