Tim, the new units appear to be sealed, clear lenses won't twist off. I shall have another look over the weekend if weather improves.

Daz, I'll keep that 'offer' in mind!?

Sorry, not had time to try and fit my side repeaters yet, half term and young child permitting hope to get it done this week. Keep your fingers crossed, or I'll have to sell them to the highest bidder?

I was lucky to be one of people who received the clear side indicators. Or so I thought! Had a go at fitting them today, starting with the drivers side...

The existing orange units are fitted in a cavity formed in the wing. There doesn't appear to be any way of accessing the inside of the cavity. The orange units are pushed into a hole in the outer wing, into the cavity, with the wires coming out through a small hole on the other side of the cavity, in the wheel arch. One of the two wires is connected to an earthing point on the wheel arch and the other is joined (inside some heat shrink) to a longer wire which disappears behind some sealing gunk which runs around the corners of the wheel arch, and reappears near a hole in the chassis, through which it disappears presumably to go up behind the dash.

The orange units clip into the hole much lilke the clear ones ie. they are pretty much impossible to remove without destroying them unless you can access the little tabs from behind (in this case inside the cavity). Even if you manage to cut the little plastic tabs off inside the hole you still can't withdraw them because there is no slack in the wiring. So you have to cut the wires in the wheel arch and have a join there (not the ideal place for a wiring join!)

I didn't mind destroying them to get them out though because I am fitting the clear ones. But then I thought about changing the bulb. On the orange units you just turn and unclip the lens. The clear ones though have a sealed lens and you access the bulb by pulling the bulb holder out of the unit from behind ie. from within the inaccessible cavity.

So I now have the remains of a destoyed orange unit still fitted and am wondering what the best course of action is. a) fit the clear unit as is and face the consequences when the bulb goes (not really a satisfactory solution, or b) as above but see if I can get an LED bulb that fits so it will never need changing, or c) abandon the current clear units and try and find some where the bulb can be replaced from the outside

Ever start a job and wish you hadn't?!?!?!

The LED option sounds like a good idea. You've come this far might as well keep going.
If all else fails you can always go back to the Orange at a later date.

I think I may have found some clear straight twist-off twist-on replacements for the orange lenses of the original side indicators - watch this space!

I'm glad you got that far with the job Tilly, I've had a qiuck look at changing mine over when I first got them.
Encountered exactly the same problems, ie would have to destroy the old unit first just removing it. Having read your comments I shall go no further, and wait to see if you've found twist on clear relacement lenses and bulbs...... one man's 'misfortune' is anothers good luck!!

( Dazdud, do you still want some clear lens units....not used!)

Tilly has now sourced clear indicator lenses that fit so I'm closing this thread.
