You know how it goes: you're out enjoying your BraziBay and whenever you stop, for fuel, at viewpoints, the supermarket and naturally campsites, you get loads of interest from passers-by.

I have no problem whatsoever chatting to anyone about my Kombi but sometimes I can't stand all day by Max answering questions as I imagine you can't. Kiteman and I reckon a FAQ sheet would go down well - but what are the top questions you get asked on a regular basis?

For me it's "is that one of those new ones?!"

Regular questions I come across are what engine, fuel economy and the cost of a fully kitted out van.

Sounds good but I don't think including the value of your vehicle would be prudent. Think that one's best kept to word of mouth.

"is it really just like the old ones?" to which I reply: "in most cases it's more like an old one than an old one as it has all the original panels."

Then when they look inside: "it really is just like an old one...."

What were they expecting, a TARDIS Kombi!

I got "how long did it take to restore it?" yesterday. If they had any idea of my practical skills they definitely wouldn't have asked that!

Quite a few people wanted to know what mpg we got and how fast it went. Almost without fail people were interested in the cost (I like the idea of answering with "not that much more than a fully restored old one").

Mostly people were interested in where to buy one and where they came from - most had assumed that new ones weren't availble.

In the main, it was the baby boomer generation wanted to re-live a real or imagined past...

Wise words indeed Tim - just because the question is asked it doesn't mean I give it a correct reply. I usually say "a couple of bob". Quite happy that the answer is known only to myself, the significant other and of course Danbury.

"Are they the ones made in Mexico?" is often asked.

Or "Wow! that's in good condition. How long did it take you to restore that?"

Same reply for both. "No. they're made in Brazil/It's brand new. There's a couple of plcaes over here that import them in an build them to your spec".

That then goes onto the "how much did it cost". Normal reply is "Too much but it's been worth every penny". Cool

The usual questions we get asked include "what is it like to drive?" The reply usually consists of mentioning that the gearbox has all the querks of something from the 1970s but the engine is modern (ours is watercooled) and while it can fly along at 70 mph it's more economical on fuel if you don't.

When asked about the cost, we say that it varies depending on what refinements you have in them, generally adding that we got ours second hand, so didn't pay what it would have cost new.

Tim; if you're putting a fact sheet together, one possible answer on cost might be to refer people to the websites of the various dealers, but also mention that they can be obtained second hand.

It might also be worth putting in a question "where can I find out more?" with the answer referring people here, as well as mentioning that there are firms that hire them for a weekend if anyone fancies trying out the experience to see what they think of it.

Have fun,

CHRIS

Generally same questions as everyone has already mentioned, along with the one that gets up my nose, 'is it a real one?' I just ignore that one now!

I was just about to post the same thing.

A guy came up to us the last time we were out in it and said 'nice van, have you seen the fake ones from Brazil' Rolling Eyes

He had a bit of a shock when he was told he was looking at one Laughing I don't think they are so fake in his eyes now Laughing

For me the most common answer I have to give is "yes it is a real Volkswagen" I think some people assume it a Japanese copy or something.

So in summary of what we've all suggested above, would the following be suitable:

You’re looking at a new Volkswagen T2 Kombi. It’s great isn’t it?!
Here’s a selection of answers to questions you may have about it:

 The Volkswagen T2 Kombi is still manufactured by Volkswagen of Brazil in Sao Paulo.
 In Brazil they are produced in 2 lhd models: panel van and mpv. Both in white.
 They are imported into the UK and converted into campervans.
 Up until 2007 they were powered by a 1.6 aircooled engine.
 Since 2007 the Kombi has been fitted with a 1.4 watercooled VW Fox engine.
 The mpg of the aircooled is around 25. The watercooled is around 40.
 The watercooled engine can run on both unleaded and bio-ethanol.
 You can buy a brand new one for not much more than a fully restored 1970s T2.
 You can buy a second hand one for less than a fully restored 1970s T2.
 They drive in a similar way to the 1970s T2.
 There are no airbags or abs but power steering is one of many options.

Want to know more and where you can get one?

Tim
Your list looks good. Could you add something on bio-fuel in the new engine?
People seem very interested/amazed when I tell them that it will run on petrol, ethanol or any mixture of the two.
