I am off to Eskdale tomorrow. Common sense suggests I take the longer coastal route. However as tomorrow looks like being bright I am tempted by the Harknott pass which has the steepest road in England. Anyone done it in a watercooled Kombi? should i give it a miss?

If I was you I'd give it a miss. Not tried it in Absinthe but I think it would make me anxious. It's bad enough in the Disco!

have been over Hardknott Pass in libelula in 2008 in june. Brenda found it rather scary but the views were amazing and the Roman Fort very interesting. We went up from Great Langdale ending up at the pub in Boot for a well deserved pint .Good luck if you brave it Roger & Brenda

Well we do like a challenge. Some time ago when visiting Damage Barton we were warned off Porlock Hill so we did take that route. All embarrassment avoided as we just crawled up behind a double-decker bus. This week we have spent a few good days at Ravenglass campsite riding the narrow-gauge railway to Eskdale and visiting Muncaster Castle. On leaving we decided to visit friends in Skelwith Bridge. The road there is single track and takes in Hardknot Pass and also Wrynose Pass. Hardknot Pass proved a bit 'hard' for the Camper as, in first gear, we had to stop with wheel-spin on a very steep right-hand bend. Unloaded a wife, a buddy seat, a toilet and some luggage then made it up the bend. Re-loaded and off we went. Probably best avoided unless you too like a challenge. osg
