Hi Den
That looks brilliant, what a set up. Love the carpet too. I've got a different Khyam, will add pics when I put it up next. It's really easy to errect, just have to remind myself with it's instructional dvd first! Can I ask you, what are you using to attach your flag pole to the bumper?

Just about to pull the trigger on an awning for this year - shortlist is Khyam Motordome Sleeper (popular on here..) and the Driveaway XL shown in these excellent pics (Mrs Edwards preference :-)

big differences appear to be

Motrodome - quicker erect, no groundsheet, expensive
Driveaway - more traditional erect, groundsheet, cheaper

I don't see much between them in terms of packed size / weight

any final thoughts before I click *BUY*

Have had a couple of emails asking me to post pics of our Khyam driveaway awning so people can see the layout and see if it is the one for them.

Just so you know, I can get the awning, bedroom partition, carpet, poles, pegs mallets etc into a 150 and 75 litre dry bags respectively and they both fit easily on our new roof rack. I can put the awning up myself in about 20 mins, then take 20 more pegging it out so it is bombproof. Takes practice though...

Waterproof wise, it is excellent. Had a 4 day storm in the Lakes and it coped great. Fits easily onto the gutter with fig of 8 attachment and best buy apart from the awning, was the carpet. Brill bit of kit. ANyway, here is is:

Motordome everytime.

Quick to build/drop down.
No issues with campsites who require specific types of groundsheet.

Have used both types of awning, Quick erect and fibreglass poles, Quick erect system everytime. It's a godsend when it's windy and can easily be put up and taken down by one person.

Never needed a ground sheet either. Grass stays dry enough plus it's all under cover anyway. Normally use a couple of straw matts at the entrance to the van to put wet shoes and stuff on.

Have also used both the figure 8 and pole and clamp system to attach to the van as well, and have to say the pole and clamp is a lot easier. Again can be done by one one person and better water proofing. The figure 8 used to leak in heavy rain.

Gonna have to spend some money on an awning for the summer - thanks for the advice, people. Motordome is favourite, I see, though I do think the Driveaway looks good too...

Mmm and I'm not a lover of the figure 8 attachment when it comes to gusty weather. I can't sleep as I worry too much the thing's going to detach and carve artistry into Max's paintwork.

Inclined to agree with Tim. We have the sleeper - I think - and use a figure of 8 which is not the most secure in windy weather. I think this year we will be using a pole and clamp. When I get round to buying one !!

Two to three feet extra headroom?
Is that only on the tunnel to the vehicle - not the main awning?
Either way, the party is at yours as you clearly have the space Laughing

They're quite popular - I had the old Spacemaker version from JK and it leaked in all four corners. But now the roof is arched so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm guessing you still have to 'construct' it though out of a multitude of metal poles and then drag the cover over the top.

Take a look at Campershop, haven't found anywhere to beat them on price and they have a good selection although not the Khyam which is very popular.

www.campershop.co.uk/22-drive-away-campervan-awnings

We have an Outlaw awning and an original 1970s Royal Traveller.

Thanks for the link - you're right, the prices are very good......mmm...awnings....

We currently have just a top awning (http://www.funkyleisure.co.uk/vw-campervan-sunflower-awningsun-canopy-197-p.asp)

It's fine but not practical enough for wind & rain!

Tim - you're right, it's the constructing it in the rain aspect that worries me. As opposed to the relative ease of a fibre-glass poled set-up.

May have to have a few practice runs in the garden beforehand...

There'll be a host of awnings on display at Volksworld if you can hold off buying until then. Undoubtedly there will be 'show deals' too.

Anyone had any pitch size issues though? Looking at something like the Driveaway XC, once i take into account the van width, it's around 6m.
That feels precariously close to some pitch limits?!
