I'm going to be driving from St Malo down to Biaritz next summer for the Kombi Kaper. It's too far to go in one day so the plan is to stop half way and check into a hotel for the night. I was thinking La Rochelle but looking at the map this might not be the best option as it means coming off the toll road. Does anyone who's done this journey have any suggestions?

Depending on what time you get off the Ferry, I'd probably be aiming for Saintes. It's between 4 and 4.5 hours driving I think. There's an Ibis and a Campanile - basic but probably all you need for an overnight.
That would give you between 3 and 3.5 hours driving to Biarritz.

Whilst we have not been, we used to work with someone that went to La Rochelle many times on holiday and they raved about it!

The st malo ferry gets in around 8am giving you a nice early start. La rochelle is an hour off your road and is prone to traffic jams in the summer so I wouldnt advise it. Saintes is around your halfway so a logical stopping place but you'll be there just after midday. Bordeaux is 300ish miles if you want to push on and would take you most of the day as a leisurely drive with decent stops. Cant help with hotels as we always use the van.

Thanks for the advice everyone. We got stuck in traffic on the road to La Rochelle at this year's Kaper so it does seem logical to keep to the main road and stop at Saintes. It'll leave a leisurely 3.5 hr drive the next day.

We are looking to head in that direction for june harry, stopping at st girons plage if the sun is shinning before continuing down to the mountains. I have a campsite in st jean d'angely in mind for the halfway stop (just before saintes). Val de boutonne, in the town centre, which gives us somewhere to look round during the afternoon/evening. The acsi book says the old town is worth a visit.
