We've kind of worn out our welcome visiting Cheddar Gorge (that's the only place we really go for a day trip). Anyone know anywhere within 50 miles of Bristol that's good to take the van and just park up with a good view?

We joined the Natural Trust, which means you can park up for free and enjoy some countryside whilst having a brew. There are loads of properties within striking distance of Bristol, and over the bridge.

Dunster is also within striking distance, and the north Devon coast around Lynton, Lynmouth, Watersmeet, on the longer summer days.

We sometimes go to Chew Valley lakes for a quick trip.

When I get home on Monday, I'll try and post some photos and more locations.

Thanks for that. Our dogs aren't very friendly, so we cannot go most places. Just some places to sit and look is what it's all about for me. Aust is nice, but you can only go to the same place so many times.

As promised, here are some of the places we have been to local to Bristol. This is a link to NT properties, not all stately home types.

A couple of other places are :-

Priddy.

Bleadon Hill. (When we go into Weston-Super-Mare, we take a packed lunch and have a brew up the hill by the golf course.)

Also at Brean, if you drive to the end of the road, you can park at the end (parking free for NT members) by Brean Down, or access the beach. (you can park on the beach for payment, but watch the tides, as you've probably seen on the local news, more vehicles have had too be pulled out of the water this week Rolling Eyes )

Basically, what we do is pick an area, I grab the OS maps, and we just go exploring, it's an adventure every time.

(I don't get a commission for mentioning the NT Smile , but I have found that the subs pay for themselves in parking costs alone, especially for summer parking in Cornwall, so everything else is a bonus.)
