Subject: A world first! 100% Electric VW Campers from Brazilian Kampers. Mon Nov 27, 2017 10:51 am
Hi All,
We have some very exciting news on a venture we have been working on for the last year or so, more details / videos will be emerging over the next few months but wanted to share our news with the Forum first.
Brazilian Kampers Ltd is taking 2000 - 2006 Air-Cooled campers and turning them into 100% electric camper vans, something that has never been done before!
We have a 1975 demo T2 in stock and a 2006 VW Danbury Rio that is being converted at the moment, if anyone wants to test drive our demo you are more than welcome to!
We are fitting 14 TESLA battery's where the fuel tank used to be , this is equal to a 42 KWH Battery pack and should be good for 150 miles plus from a single charge, the motor is a 54KW Motor producing 163NW, a lot more power than the old 1600cc engine! With the special adapter plate it on the gearbox it still has a clutch but is Automatic in the fact that you pull away in 4th gear and do not have to change at all due to the power, plus it cannot be stalled! Once the camper is on hook up at the camp site it will charge the electric power pack, plus your leisure battery and 240v hook up!

There be the future. To Brazinity and Bayond.............
A few questions of interest: Does it use a standard charging cable to be found at points around the country so you can use the standard infrastructure? How long does charging take? Battery longevity and replacement costs? What's the top speed? Any acceleration figures? How much for an engine replacement (if someones should go bang)? Thanks.

No idea how i missed this post! Will be following closely! 150 miles is more than I get on a tank, so if it doesnt take too long to charge, could get me to glastonbury and back, emission free!!

Would be interested to know if any cab heating is available from the battery pack. And if so what impact this would have on the range before the need to re-charge osg

Hi Dennis and OSG,
In the 2006 we are fitting a front electric heating system, as the campers have regeneration when braking and the battery capacity it will not affect the range at all.
Dennis, very good question! There is an electric vacuum pump that works the servo, in fact on our demo van it works better now than when it was connected to the engine vacuum system!

It is hard to believe that if stuck for ages in a traffic jam in icy conditions the electric heater would not seriously deplete the battery. What is the power use of the electic heater? and the AmpHour capacity to the drive battery? osg

The Telsa battery pack we fit is 42kwh. The draw from the heater is TINY in comparison, plus the campers also have a 12v battery that powers everything!
Think about a Tesla car with heater, electrics, a mass of computers , heated windscreens , heated seats , electric seats, the list goes on!! On our campers its just lights, basic stereo and a small heater!
When we get our 2006 Brazilian back with a heater i will run some tests for you and leave the heater on for 24hrs and report back with battery loss, i don't even think it would be 1% of the battery pack.

Here is a link suggesting lots of loss of range osg

Hi OSG,
It has a parasitic load on the battery pack about the amount as AC does on a petrol car so around 8%, or to work backwards, the heater draws 1.5kw so left on the MAX setting it would take 28 hours to drain the battery pack if left on full.

Firstly, I am not arguing against the new electric camper which seems a good idea - only pointing out the problem for all electric powered vehicles.
In the present case the battery is 42Kwhr for a range say of 150 miles. Keeping the 1.5 Kw heater on for the, say, 4 hours taken to make this journey would use 6Kwhrs which is equivalent to (150/42) x 6 = 21 miles.
So the range of 150 miles without heater becomes 129 miles with heater on.
This is not as bad as the loss of range mentioned in the link above. osg

Just another thought if choosing a cab heater for a campervan.
A heater with 1.5Kw for on the road use would benefit from an alternative lower (less than 1.0Kw) setting to be used when the camper is hooked up to the campsite mains supply

I like the idea of a heater with different KW settings!
Don't forget about the REGEN that would put some power back into the battery pack when braking etc.
