We're starting to get a few bits of rust in places like the vents at the back (not sure what these bits are called). Any suggestions as to the best sort term/long term treatment(s)

Have you got a picture of the problem?
The paint color is likely to be VW Candy White, so an easy job for any paint shop. If its internal to the vents a little time with a rust inhibitor called kurust from hammerite, sanding, primer and paint it should look good again. In the vents its hardly a showroom finish from the factory. Or mine wasn't! Short blasts of paint through the vents so that it does not drip.
Sanding wise get some sandpaper on the end of a bit of dowel and should give reasonable access in the vents.

Useful tip about the exact colour. I don't want to go down the route of professionals (yet) so I might try to just touch it up a bit for now. Its just surface on the leading edges.
I'd link a picture, but I've no idea how.

If its a little area or a chip, treat rust etc then spray into the spray cap so you have a little puddle of paint. Use an artist brush (nothing expensive) and paint by dabbing as its the surface tension that pulls the thin spray paint off the brush not as such a brushing action.
For areas that need to be tough and not seen directly like the gutters where the pop top rubs. White smooth hammerite is a reasonably good match.
