PostSubject: Curtains behind front seats   Wed Jun 08, 2011 4:29 pm

Inspired by this discussion here I have been using the pop top handle to hang an extra-large bath towel on during some recent wildcamping trips to curtain off the cab area (roof closed). It makes the inside cosier and saves carrying and faffing around with the sucker screens, which always fall off in the middle of the night anyway (I know I know, dirty windows...) When wildcamping, it makes it less obvious that the van is occupied over night, and is also good for hiding your belongings when leaving the van for any length of time.

I'm going to be having some less bland curtains in Tilly, and have realised that the front edge of the Danbury pop top opening appears to be in exactly the right place to mount a curtain track so that the curtains would fall just behind the front seats. Unlike using the pop top bar, it will stay in the same place regardless of whether the roof is up or down, and it's straight unlike the roof line.

So before I do anything rash I was just wondering whether anyone had done this? Any pitfalls to look out for?

We too have used the rail to hang cloths/towels etc. when away - as you say gives some privacy without the thermal screens.
With regard to the curtain rail contact Kiteman - have seen his installation and it seems to work well

Yes we too have the curtain fixture ,very simple to do aluminium rail and curtain fixings from any vw curtain supplies, screws onto area below front pull down handle as this is just a piece of timber wrapped in fabric, very very good to keep the draught out and of course the privacy, you will also need to fix a press stud to side of van and cutain to help keep it in situ ,or velcro dots that stick to metal and onto curtain if you dont want to drill any holes .

Got mine running behind the seat as well, got my rail from B&Q.

Just need to make sure the curtain is deep enough. I ended up getting a set from ebay and stitched the two front cab curtains, that were meant to go around the front screens, one on top of the other.

if you have curtains now in the rear ,then these no doubt will be on very small curtain rail/alloy,these comein two styles hanging from underneath or from front edge, as i said before you can get these from cutain suppliers for vw' s who will also advise you to which rail you require ,supply you with rail ,curtain hooks etc ,and fitting is via small size 4 screws into wood bulkhead

We are in the process of ordering new curtains from a vw curtain supplier and will be getting them to make us a curtain to go across there, they sell the same track that is in our van, which i was going to screw in to the wood surround. They said over the phone that they would do them for the same price as a splity set (7 curtains) with the large curtain included

Thanks everyone, esp. kiteman for going to the trouble of taking photos, clearly great minds think alike! Very Happy

I was planning on screwing the same type of track as I already have to the front side of the wooden pop top edge (avoiding the minor complication of the catches on the other side) but lilyvdub's mention of small screws has made me think maybe a hanging type track on the bottom edge would be better - then when the little screws pull out in the future I have the option of using longer screws. Will be very homely - now all I need is an on-board aga!

hi tilly the catches on either side will go over the track if you get the track with the runner at the bottom ,ours does with no problem ,as for the small screws 12mm ones seem to be fine i wouldnt think they would come loose ... as theres no weight in the curtain and the rail is very freely moving as in the back if you have them fitted from danbury.

Tilly's new curtains have arrived and and you certainly wouldn't describe them as bland anymore! I wish I could say I made them myself but I didn't, I got them from www.vwcampercurtains.co.uk. I'm impressed by the quality, range of choice (over 700 fabrics!), price and service - would definitely recommend. My fabric is the "Crazy Daisy" pattern - you'll see why in these before and after pics:

Yes, I have symmetry OCD too:

The cab curtains still need some poppers and further adjusting when I've found my mislaid popper tool:

New cab curtains drawn...am I really going to be able to get to sleep with that lot going on?!:

If I was doing it again I would consider making the new cab curtains go down to seat level rather than floor level - there;s rather a lot ot fabric to stuff behind the buddy box on the right and the stowed table on the left.

Overall though I'm really chuffed - it's brightened up the inside considerably.

You could be pitched in the grimmest of places, yet still wake up in a sunny place. I'll need to browse their catalogue ...
