Hello everyone. I was convinced there was a forum for us Brazzer buses out there somewhere and I've surfed the world looking for technical stuff over the years and have only now stumbled on the site.

Our camper is a 2001 one off conversion of the panel version by Rainbow Conversions. As part of the conversion we also comissioned an engineering company to saw the roof off and seam weld a stock new roof back on which they then promptly cut a hole in to fit an old Dormobile elvating roof off an old splitty (the splitty had gone samba hence the roof being available).

Our bus is called Florence and has taken us many places over the last 8 years as far as Croatia one summer and up and back down the Pyrennes another.

I've got a load of questions to ask and perhaps the odd thing to share. I'll post these in the techy bits - the first will be about how I have learnt through this site that these Brazil buses don't have hydraulic lifters which I am really upset to leasrn (and verified this weekend in an emergency session of readjustment) as beleive it or not these have not been adjusted since ownership. Even the original Beetles UK (as was then) didn't include this on their schedule of maintainance provided with the vehicle! In fact it states not to touch the valves due to being fuel injected.

We love our bus (as the sticker reads in the back window) and looking forward to our first family trip to France in a fortnight's time so loads of things to do before we go.

Welcome Flossy and congrats for not getting caught out by your tappets!

That makeover sounds very extreme - do you have photos showing the roof transfer by any chance - that would be a wild read!?

Great to have you onboard and you've no doubt loads of stories to tell ........

We took 2 or 3 (prints rather than digital) which I can scan. The experience was quite fraught at times not to mention costly but we're glad we did. We have also replaced the odd bit of black plastic with metal (or metal coloured plastic!) e.g. front air grille and VW badge, door mirrors and front light rims. Also added an oil temp gauge.

Pictures of Florence having a new roof and Dormobile top adding. The scans are a little grainy but hopefully you can see the sheer terror of what was involved! Will post pictures of the finishes article as we know her now following her fit internal fit out by Rainbow Conversions. Mick Spies is the guy who runs Rainbow and was an absolute treasure. He did a lovely job which still satifies over 7 years later. Mick did VW transporter conversions some time ago and still had all his templates in his factory. It was Mick who reported after much head scatching that the Brazil bus is 3 inches longer than the German one!

A bit later than advertised but here's a picture of Flossy and her Dormobile roof on our recent summer hols. The Navigator drive away awning attached was used for the first time this holiday and was a real luxury addition giving loads of outside space. Parking back up after a day trip away needs to be inch perfect however.

That roof transfer is really a work of art. Brilliant!

Nice that you kept your Brazilian bumpers though as a nod to your Bay's origin.

what a teriffic roof! apart from the doors I would struggle to tell the difference between your brazibay and a late bay. Thats a good roof to choose as well, the roof lights are ace. My tin top is feeling very green at the moment...

It's a funny thought that the bay is 2001 and the roof could be 1961, i.e. 40 years between them. I think the Dormobile roof was a lot futyher forward but we poistioned this on to give better rear space with a headlined cab. Apart from the doors there are a number of clues to the Brazilian underneath if you know what you're looking for. We even planned the colour - original VW Niagra Blue - around the plausible 1973 change over year from early to late bay when the round bumpers could have been retained before going square. Even the reg plate is now 1973. Sad I know. We are very proud of Flossy and hope with some sensible TLC and hard cash will last another 40....Ok I'll settle for 20.
