Bike Racks Empty
PostSubject: Bike Racks   Bike Racks EmptyTue Feb 11, 2014 4:40 pm

Hi All,

Ive got a quick one for you!

I have a 2008 Danbury that camper into stock on Friday and has sold today, it has a rear tow bar and a rear colour coded spare wheel carrier.

The new owner is looking for a bike rack and ive seen somewhere, a bike rack that mounts to the tow bar and clears the spare wheel carrier!

Does anyone know where i can purchase one of these from?

Many Thanks

Ian

My Thule Easybase does just that, though don't know if that is the one you've seen. I have it set up as a rear-rack but there is a bike carrier attachment for it.

Just bought one from pendle Ian, the bracket fits between the tow ball and the mounting plate. It then has two offset arms the slot into it. You can also still tow with the bikes on the rack.

We had the Pendle bike rack fitted by Danbury which has the two arms that fit into the attachment on the two bar.  It functions well as a bike rack but it is not very secure.  Even if bikes are locked on to the rack - the rack is only secured to the vehicle via a steel pin.  A knowing thief could detach the arms plus bikes plus bike locks from the van in a matter of seconds.  So take care if parked up at a service station or pub car park etc and leaving the bike and van unguarded.  Thule also do a rack that accommodates a rear spare that locks on a tow bar but it is quite a bit more expensive.  Hope this helps.

Oh and another warning re Pendle attachment to tow bar.  It is a bit lower than tow bar.  I parked our van on a neighbour's drive as we were having some work done on a chimney and I had visions of bricks falling on Morrison. Said drive is quite steep.  As I backed off the drive to return Morrison to our drive all of 15 yards away, the bike attachment caught the tarmac on the pavement and I was stuck Embarassed .  Embarrassing or what!  Embarassed  Had to get the RAC out - they pumped the rear tyres up which was enough to undig the corner that sunk into tarmac and we were free. Embarassed

I have the Pendle bike rack. If you use a cable type lock on the bikes, this can be fed through a noose on the towbar hitch specifically there to act as a securing point. So the bikes and rack cannot be removed from the van even if the pins get pulled.

Thanks Tim - even in the shed I lock bikes with a D-lock and a Kyrptonite cable - so will ensure they are in Morrison when we are out and about. Loved the pic of Max and the bikes in Richmond Park.

Am looking too for a tow bar fitting bike carrier , for when I've had my tow bar fitted courtesy of VWK.
The thule easybase looks like it could well be fit for purpose for me so will be sending Sunny a PM for a recommendation or not!

I have been known to write here occasionally as well Wink

I like the Easybase system and its name is not a misnomer.

The Easybase system appears excellent but it doesn't look as if you can still use the tow bar for anything else. I'm guessing the only options available to do this are the MaxxRaxx or the Pendle.

Good point HH but with only the two of us realistically something of that nature would suit our needs, can see others with a trailer could find it less practical.. I also need a towbar first lol.

With just 2 bikes you might want to look at the Fiamma. Highly recommended.

The standard Fiamma is good but is a faff to take on and off. It's not something you would want to do regularly.

It also interferes with the rubber seal at the top of the rear door which can result in a leak in heavy rain or when washing with a hose.

I also found that a small amount of grit built up under the rubber pads where is sits next to the paintwork, unless the rack is removed regularly to clean the pads and paintwork it can leave scuff marks. I added some clear lense repair tape under the pads to protect the paintwork in the end as our rack tended to stay on for quite some time.

Our MaxxRaxx can hold up to 4 bikes although we normally only have 1 or 3 loaded. You can get one for just 2 which I expect is slightly cheaper.

Great advice as ever , would definitely prefer something to keep the bikes clear of the paintwork so that certainly helps guys cheers...
