Went up to Sedbergh today to shut down our Static van for the winter and took the opportunity to take a few shots of Absinthe with the Sleepy Elephants of the Howgills (link) in the background.

If you look at the pics showing the rear wheel cover you'll see lots of dirty rusty water marks. I get these whenever it's wet as water drips down from the right hand gutter onto the bracket bolts for the wheel carrier and leaches out as rusty water. This then sprays onto the carrier and the rear of the van.
Does anyone else have this problem and could you advise how to cure it? It rains a lot in Lancashire so it's driving me mad!

Nice pics brought back memories, I love the Dales, had a cracking holiday there a few years back. Just looked at Dizzy's carrier, no problems. Is there a rubber seal between the bracket and bodywork on Absinthe? I'd be inclined to have the brackets off and give the backs a good coating of hammerite, and make sure the bolt holes on the body are well rustproofed.

I don't think there is a rubber seal - I'll take a look this weekend (too dark when I get home)

I think the rubber is more of a cushion than a seal, its quite thin, and has a gap down the back on Dizzy. Its a bit of a pain, but I think the holes in the body need proofing.

If you get a chance could you take a pic so I can compare with Absinthe please?

I'd recommend you spin the spare wheel carrier too, so that the clamp/lock is at the bottom. That way any water that collects in the carrier will naturally drain out of the bottom and not stay within the casing.

Herewith photos, not too clear, but rubber is only about 1mm thick.
