| As I drove into work this morning and went past the local petrol station, it got me thinking:
£25k Restored Classic Bay vs £25k 2009 New VW T2.
Roundtrip from London to Newquay fuel costs: Classic Bay £224 vs New T2 Bay £98 @£1.45/litre
Based on the Classic Bay returning 15mpg vs 35mpg from an AquaBay. ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay

| Tim, that makes it feel a wise decision to move from the classic to New T2. Just out of interest what would be the rough average speed of the van to achieve those figures? | |

| I'm sure one of our AquaBay drivers could give you that figure. ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay | |

| Recent Aqubay trip to Bristol and back, so mostly motorway travel. 36mpg travelling with 60-65 on the clock - probably average 60mph on the road osg | |

| Errr, for me it's something like 31 mpg, and an average speed of 70mph -sat nav (75 on speedo)
I fly past the older T2s.
And I've never broken down in 25,000 miles ________________________________________________________________________________ I thought the van was blue, but now I'm told its Lilac

| hey Tim, you are right. but before you think about an aquabay, look for this: http://www.autogas-aisb.de/index.php?page=Home
they built the orginal engine to a gas engine. in all germany all garages sayd to me, that they dont built that in the t2C. but a bay-kolleg told me about his new engine with gas. it is till 1jear and 8 month amortized. the new engine coast 1800Euro. when you drive a lot of kilometers it will be cheeper for the time you drive it. After you have an aircooled bay with gas, but it is as cheep as an aquabay :-) the there is no problem :-) but the aquabay is modern :-) ________________________________________________________________________________ http://www.t2-c.de

Danbury wanted too much for their conversion but I've got price of £1500 for converting a T2 and will investigate further once I've actually got my van. With LPG half the price of unleaded, even factoring in the lower mpg LPG returns its got to be worth while.

| LPG has just gone up to 60 p per litre in our tank at home!!!! That nearly double what it was when we moved out here in the sticks 5 years ago!! Have recently been offered an LPG conversion for the air cooled bays for 750.00 for the kit and one days labour, think we will do one just to test it out, so watch this space for running costs. | On a trip south-west last year, Max averaged 25mpg, so on that basis, the Newquay trip would cost £135. The relatively modern fuel injection really helps keep the consumption down, but it isn't as good as an AquaBay. ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay | |

If these are figures you've achieved with your 2004 then I would agree - it's because the fuel injected Aircooled Kombi is more efficient than a Classic Bay. My 2004 averages 25mpg. ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay

| I guess it depends on the condition of the classic, I have a pal who has a 78 Westfalia and she returns on average 25mpg, so maybe 15mpg is an unfair estimate, certainly the new watercooled engine does deliver better mpg, I am just glad Olive is not our daily runner and she is just our holiday home.

Is that a 1600? Official figures from the 1979 owner's manual state combined mpg to be: 24.8mpg for the 1.6 21.7mpg for the 2.0 ________________________________________________________________________________ Max SportsKombi - The Bay Racer @brazilianvwbay

| Owners manual figures also tend to be a touch on the optimistic side.
We just came back from a 4 day tour of South Devon, Dorset and the New Forest, fully loaded and with bikes on the back. Somewhere around 400 miles travelled including a couple of big hills, and returned an average of 33mpg overall. ________________________________________________________________________________ www.alpinegrovetouringpark.com Twitter: @AlpineGrove Facebook: facebook.com/alpinegrovetouringpark
