Thinking of buying but not prepared to do 1,000 mile round trips twice a year to keep the warranty.
Any advice?

Hi, welcome to the forum. Makes sense not to travel the distance. With the new Aqua it is a modern engine so you should have no problems finding a local mechanic to service that part of your Kombi. With regard to all of the other original Type 2 designs, find a VW air-cooled mechanic and I am sure they will service all of those parts for you. They should be able to carry out all of the service. This will invalidate the warranty but to be fair to use the warranty you must adhere to Danbury's service schedule which is overkill and expensive so once you work out the differences you will probably be Quids in finding someone local. It may be worth sending a pm to Skytiger as he is based in gods country, he will be able to give you loads of advice, he has an air-cooled. Also bear in mind of other suppliers of the Kombi, and with all of the extras available, you can source them yourself which would save you pounds. Good luck and look forward to hearing about your new venture

I concur, unless you live within a reasonable distance of Danbury, you are much better off finding a local VW specialist. There are plenty of Volkswagen specialists these days who span the great divide between Aircooled and Watercooled. The Kombi is relatively simple in maintenance terms, a lot of it you can do yourself, but any good VW specialist should be able to tackle your needs.
There's an abundance of information contained on this site, the majority of it gleaned by experience, and if it isn't here, we'll do our best to find it out for you.
I look forward to you becoming a member of the 'club' cabin. Welcome!

I get mine cared for by a great guy called "Olly" in Dorset, a fraction of Danbury prices

Do you need to buy new? If you bought a second hand or pre-owned, it probably wouldn't have a warranty anyway.
Good luck in finding your camper

I've raised this before, but never got a reply.

It does surprise me Sunny that they can charge for something that your legally entitled to do anyway.
If you like I'll teach you how to service it yourself dg, that way you'll know more about your kombi should things go wrong.

Hi
This is a much belated reply and I'm sure you will have settled this by now but just in case its of any interest you can get your van serviced by Sage Diagnostics in Bedlington - just north of Newcastle. Sage are agents for Danbury and this will keep your guarantee in place. I have had 3 separate issues with my van since I got it in January 2010 and all have been fixed by Danbury under the guarantee with no quibble. I live in Shetland which is 190 miles north of Aberdeen on the Scottish Mainland. I have to take a 12 hour overnight ferry to get to Aberdeen - cost £184 (and that's a concession price for islanders!) I then have a 498 mile drive to Yate so the 242 mile drive to Bedlington is a breeze. Fortunately I really like driving my van and I have a son and daughter strategically placed in Newcastle and Oxford respectively so journeys for a service are taken in with family visits. At Christmas I will have had the van for 3 years and the Danbury guarantee will have run its course. At that time I will probably have the half year service done locally by our VW dealer here on the islands. I stiill think I will get the major one done when I'm south - as long as I can afford it as it is not "cheap" Good luck.
