Hiring a car this Friday. Just been sent this by Europcar:
You are due to pick up your hire vehicle from Europcar in the next 72 hours.
DON'T FORGET that from 8 June 2015 UK driving licence holders hiring vehicles within the UK will need to use the new online DVLA service "Share Driving Licence" to validate their driving record as the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence will no longer be valid.
Share Driving Licence will generate a one-time code which is valid for a maximum period of 72 hours and requires the driver to submit their driving licence number, National Insurance number and home postcode.
To access the service and generate your DVLA Share Driving Licence code click here.
Please bring the code and your driving licence with you when picking up your hire vehicle from Europcar.
For more information see http://www.europcar.co.uk/dvla-changes or call 0116 217 3541
Please do not reply to this email as the mailbox is unattended.
** Note - non-UK Licence holders are n ot affected by this change
What a total b#ll ache! Can I remember my National Insurance number?!

Have a look on your latest pay slip.
You will need a new code each time you hire too, but at least you no longer need to be concerned about losing the paper part of your license.

So now I've gone onto the DVLA website, generated the code, stored it in my phone for Friday to quote to Europcar. What a load of b=ll#cks this is - this is going to make picking a hire car up so time consuming. Grrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

Whilst I agree the new system is causing a bit of chaos, I find it rather surprising you don't know your national insurance number of by heart. I thought everyone would know theirs, it is rather an essential number, frequently needed.
As an aside, I'm glad we've finally ditched that stupid bit of paper. I remember when the card came out, to the fanfare of how modern DVLA had become, yet we still had to have that piece of paper. Stoopid.

The code is also only valid for 72 hours which means you can't get one on a Monday and hire on a Friday. I wonder how the foreign car hire companies will work this new system. If you don't prebook I presume you'll need to go online whilst abroad before you are allowed to hire a car.

I'm with Tim on this. DVLA seem to want to automate everything but their systems just can't keep up. I'm trying to retain a number plate online, I meet all the criteria to do so but it fails so i have to do it through the post taking 10 days. Ring DVLA and they can't even tell me why it doesn't work !!

I'm hanging onto my paper counterpart. The DVLA didn't consult with licence holders let alone with the thousands of rental outlets, local police forces etc around the world. The golden rule of change management is "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

Think you'll find that the DVLA's position is that they're saving their customers £1000s by not charging them for replacement paper licences .... tbh I'd rather they didn't worry about that, just like the road tax fiasco I think this will cause a lot of grief over the next few years.

Me neither , have to locate payslip or P60 for it ...
I still have my original paper licence not paying for a photo card licence unless I'm forced too...

Nor me.
I shall be hanging onto mine, not only for nostalgic reasons, (I still have my red cardboard one somewhere ), but because I have heard of people in the past re-applying for a licence only to be told that they have never passed a test, because the computer says so, and the computer never lies.
If you lose the card, at least with the paper counterpart you have some physical proof of your entitlements.
