PostSubject: Key insurance cover.   cover - Key insurance cover. EmptyWed Oct 05, 2016 5:44 pm

I recently renewed an insurance cover for a caravan with The Camping and Caravanning Club, and at the end of the renewal process the call handler said (as they do) "can I interest you in another product" I thought 'here we go'. Anyway, would I be interested in cover for all your keys for an additional £10 per year.

It would cover loss, theft and damage. When he mentioned damage, my ears pricked up.......knowing the fragility of the kombi ignition key. He went on to explain that it would cover the cost of the key and its reprogramming. Knowing the cost of that I thought I'd give it a go for £10.

Today I received the paperwork and key fob and thought it may be of interest.

The only problems I can see are at 10 and 12, ie it's not covered (£50 max) if it breaks in the ignition (however if it breaks outside the ignition it is covered Wink )

And it doesn't appear to cover reprogramming the ecu/immobiliser, only the key itself.

Looks interesting. Have they sent you the designated fob yet? I'm assuming that it will have a return address on it and a number for people to ring if they find the keys.

Yes, it's got a 24 hour contact number (or hand in to police), a bit about a £10 reward, and a unique reference number so they know who the keys belong to, but I was more interested in the damage side of things. It looks like if the transponder packs up, or the key happens to bend or break, away from the ignition, the savings could be in the hundreds.

Being pedantic, section 10 does say 'lock or ignition' so the limit of £50 would apply if the key snapped in any of the locks.

It is interesting though, I've had this optional extra for while now (ever since the key card for our Renault packed up for no apparent reason and cost £250 to replace) although have never had cause to claim.

Can you take this insurance out as a stand alone cover or does it need to be attached to the original policy?

Not sure HH, this is their website.

It looks like they supply to the insurance industry as an add on, and it's not a stand-alone policy.
