Two fuel caps? Empty
PostSubject: Two fuel caps?   Two fuel caps? EmptyTue Sep 19, 2017 7:58 pm

Hi. Can anyone tell me why my water cooled bay has 2 caps. Had the van for 3 years and never put anything in the other tank. Is anything meant to go in it?
Cheers

The tank on the near side of the van is for petrol, the one on the Offside is for either petrol or bio fuel. I've had my van for nine years, I have syphoned the small near side tank once and refilled it with new petrol, but if I'm correct the van starts off this tank then switches over to the main one.

Well, well. Thanks for the info. Weird set up. Van starts ok so maybe it doesn't need it but I'll fill it anyway.
Cheers

It's only a small tank, so take care when filling, you should get a warning light on the dash when it's empty.
It's used if your running on bio-fuel

Your van will not use small tank if you have petrol in main tank it will only switch to small take if running bio fuel in very cold weather and van will not fire instantly so uses small tank to get van to fire

Two fuel caps? Empty

The small tank (the one without keylock) is for petrol. The petrol in this tank is used when the main tank is filled mostly with ethanol (made from sugarcane) - in Brazil we can fill the main tank with both petrol and ethanol, in any proportion, from pure petrol to pure ethanol (we call it Flex-Fuel). When there is too much (or pure) ethanol in the tank, starting the engine on colder days (usually bellow 20ºC) can be quite hard. In the 80's, the way to solve the starting difficulties on ethanol engines is to put a small thank for petrol. As there were no eletronic fuel injection, there was a button on the console, so we injected a bit of petrol only to start the engine.

I don't think you have ethanol available in UK, so supposedly there is no need to fill the small thank. If you fill it anyway, DO NOT FILL WITH ETHANOL, just petrol. The brazilian manual indicate to fill it with premium petrol.

On both tanks, never use leaded petrol.
