Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands Empty
PostSubject: Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands   Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands EmptyTue Jan 11, 2011 4:29 pm

Hi all,
We're currently planning a 10 day trip in Babs over to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands in April. We are taking the ferry across from Hull, and that's as far as the planning has got at this stage. Has anyone got any suggestions for must see places/campsites etc (one for you, Belgiumbay??)? Any first hand experience from people who have been to these places would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Jimmy,

Sounds like a great trip! I'm from Germany, so...

Top notch is the magical-mythical 'Sächsische Schweiz' (Saxon Switzerland) in former East Germany, 'Schwarzwald' (Black Forest) and the town of Freiburg in Bavaria, and of course the Alps.

The area north of Berlin, 'Mecklenburg-Vorpommern' contains an amazing network of lakes, awesome for fishing, but make sure you visit when the mosquitos are not out.

Closer to Belgium is the area of the 'Ruhrgebiet', a dense collection of cities such as Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach, Dortmund, etc. where Germany got its coal and steel from until the 70s. The amazing thing is that all the now-defunct industrial installations are now nature reserves and art galleries – definitely a place to visit!

Here's a link to the Sächsische Schweiz and a general list of nature reserves in Germany.

Here a link to one of the highlights of the industrial area of the 'Ruhrgebiet'.

I cannot recommend any specific campsites, though.

Best, max
