We buy these expensive vans that don't drive like modern cars that are slow and take alot of up keep. We fight with rust and for the price we paid we could have a 3 series BMW but i wouldn't and couldn't swap Geraldine for any other car because to me she's like a big st Bernard dog ie big slow and full of fun. So what makes you love your bus and what makes us owners slightly different?

I definitely second the above thoughts.
I don't think a 3 series BMW would have quite so many people waving and pointing like they do with our vans - or even applauding as happened last year in France on our Kombi Kaper
The friends one makes are also special, this Forum certainly has a good cross section of society - though to be fair that is probably true of any club you get involved in.

I agree Geoff. A good cross section of society is what makes the forum so good. Obviously the common factor is owning a VW 'van but everything else is what makes our meet ups so good. Making new friends from different walks of life! How boring would life be if we only mixed with people that were the same as us?

Living in Cornwall and being a surfer, there is no other iconic vehicle to own. My own surfboard transport and changing room.
I do a lot of DIY. It takes 8'x4' sheets of plaster, 4m lengths of wood and sooooo much to the tip.
It has heads turning here (which is why I have our B&B adverts on the doors).
And, as I found out this week, I can work on it myself. Look under the BMW3 series bonnet, you'll be lucky if you can find the dip stick let alone replace change a belt or service it up.
Talking to VW owners is always a pleasure. I don't talk to BMW owners

I think a lot of it is about wanting a break from the norm.

Think it's a passion, letting the heart rule the head. Life would be pretty dull if we didn't do that once in a while though eh?!

Agreed SD. The reaction we got from French motorists last summer as we Kombikonvoyed along the autoroutes was amazing. Even les Gendarmes gave us a smile.
