We have a 2007 diesel (Renault Megane 1.5dci) for which we pay £30 annual road fund license. It's not as economical as it used to be, returning 40mpg(ish) where it used to give 45 on normal short distance rush hour runs - still up at 50+ mpg for longer runs - but I can't see us owning it for another 6 years...

I've never really understood how forcing the scrapping of older vehicles was supposed to be environmentally sustainable. It would be interesting to know the carbon footprint of scrapping an old vehicle and manufacturing a new one. I understand that the motor industry is desperate for growth, but well over 90% of the world's population doesn't own a car.

My folks traded their '98 Audi A4 in for 'scrappage' in 2010 against a new Golf. To date the Audi is still registered with the DVLA.
