Graig Wen's publicity talks of "natural Welsh highs". Whatever the management were thinking of, we wondered if it referred to the panoramic views over the Mawddach estuary and the mountains of southern Snowdonia beyond. Sarah and John, the owners, are also keen to share their high (viewpoint) as there's a discreet notice making sure everyone knows that the best viewpoint - complete with benches - is there to be used by everyone.
This is a very good natured site, from the tree swings in the woods to the offer of home made croissants and the array of local farm produce on sale at reception. At the bottom of the site, there's an old railway turned into a cycle track, and the owners are very good at suggesting ways that you can combine this with local buses to enjoy a day out walking, cycling, or even to get to the pub more quickly. So we left the roof up and the electric hooked up for the weekend, and walked as far as Barmouth.
It's primarily a tent based site, as it tumbles its way down the slope, and the owners don't generally advise taking a T2 down the track to the lower fields. The top field is quite small, but the pitches do all have electricity, and the tree cover made it feel surprisingly intimate and private considering it was a busy weekend.
The shower block is a little basic, though Sarah and John assured us that they're working on plans for an eco-friendly replacement...... maybe that will be powered by natural Welsh highs as well?
