Buying safety Empty
PostSubject: Buying safety    Buying safety EmptyMon Aug 30, 2021 9:15 pm

Hi

Wishing to come back into the fold of T2 ownership , I’ve this time opted for the newer edition but wonder how to conduct a private sale .. and get checked the van health/ status ,,,

It’s a 2013/14 but Immobiliser flashes when driving
It has a after market immobiliser fitted which works fine  it has key fobs and keypad on steering column
I’m told the aftermarket immobiliser disables the Volkswagen one and the light registers a fault and assumes the keys have no chips

The above I’m informed could cost a good weeks wages to put right if faulty /going faulty but if it’s a stolen van they’ve managed to pass the immobiliser on it could cost me over £30k

So the dilemma is who can you call on to check it’s authenticity ?

Any input thanks in advance 👍

Gentlemen selling seems totally  genuine but not owner from new
Will also load pic below of my old girl about 1989

You can get an AA history check for £14.99 which will check whether the vehicle has been reported stolen, written off, has unpaid finance etc. Hopefully somebody who has an aftermarket mobiliser can comment on the other issue.

We have an after market alarm. The factory immobiliser is still active as it’s connected (as you say ) to the keys and steering column.

Do they have the code for the key pad? If they do then that’s a good sign
The pad works instead of the fobs so with fobs in hand check it.

Also check the Mot history on the government web site. It’s free just need reg No

Sorry not much help

Hi
if you get the 11 digit number from the log book V5C from him you can get the details of the MOT centre used on the gov web site. With info on where he lives(actually lives) this may help to tie it together or not.

His drivers license with confirm who he is and where he lives. If he can/won’t show you. Run a mile.

Ask him where he gets it serviced and MOT. then ask the garage. All the garages near me will not touch it with a barge pole for servicing but will MOT it.

Check his address on the V5C it should match up. If you are not going to his house pay the house a visit ask the home owner info.

If he has had it a while he will have pictures (old one) As I’m sure you know bay camper owners can’t stop taking photos of our bays. You can then check the age of the pic on a computer. If he’s not had it long or doesn’t have old pictures I would run a mile

Ask who his insurance is with, then give them a ring. I’m sure they will give you a bit of help.
If it’s not insured why not. Run!

Try your local police station they may help. After all they can check actual owner. Insurance company etc. They probably will not tell you anything but should confirm what you already know

It all adds up to a good feeling

Check the paper quality of the V5C with a legitimate one. It’s funny paper!

I’m sure a genuine seller will understand the reasons behind the 20 questions. If he doesn’t then there is something fishy !

I’m sure there’re more ways to test his knowledge of the bay. Type of antifreeze. Correct engine oil. Etc.
Does he have extra stuff for the van in his house. We all have lots of extra stuff.
Does he belong to a forum like this or website if he does check his history posts

It’s your hard earned money so do as much as you can to protect it!

If its a long distance purchase go to see him. Spent a few days in the area and don’t rush it
Think if it does go pear shaped after you have got it , what should you have done that you didn’t and do it now before

Good luck

Please don’t put brand and model numbers on a forum that is open to the public? Keep sensitive information guarded.
