Another true story from the archives.
In days gone by, when the police still had social clubs, one PC on my shift (Mike Y.....d) at the Motorway Control Room used to organise all the outings like Blackpool Illuminations, and kids Christmas parties. One trip he organised was a coach trip to Dudley Zoo for a few parents and kids.
As you go into the zoo, there is a kiosk for buying all the usual goodies, so the kids were all allowed to buy an item like sketch pads, pencils etc. and they all went off round the attractions.
Later they all went back to Mike's for tea and sandwiches, and while the grown-ups sat downstairs for a chat, the kids were sent upstairs to play.
After half an hour, someone said 'the kids are unusually quiet, wonder what they are doing' so Mike went to see.
As he opened the door, he saw a penguin sitting on the bed.
It appears one of the kids had bought a large carrier bag at the kiosk, and on the trip round had 'half inched' the penguin when no-one was looking.
A speedy call to the zoo was made, and they came and collected said penguin, so apart from a few red faces, no harm was done.
