Just as an aside, my RHD Danbury is an '04 and has not had a problem getting through an MOT due to its steering .... so far. It would be interesting to see if anyone else has had this issue.

Hi Denni - The Danbury conversion from left to right hand drive does NOT cause any play in the steering box. The same steering box (brand new from VW) is used if the car is ordered left or right hand drive and nothing we do in the conversion alters the 'play'. Any steering box play should be adjusted on each of the vehicles services ( as it always has been on a VW T2 bus of any age ). The rack and pinion steering option is only availble from Danbury for new watercooled T2 and has never been available before. The speed sensitive power steering option is also exclusive to Danbury. The Brazilian chassis is different to the older German model. This should explain everything.

Hi Denni - Like I said the conversion doesnt alter the steering box so its not down to that (as Tim has said to you his steering on his 6 year old Danbury passes the MOT with no problems) Who offered you the rack and pinion steering and is it for air or water cooled models and German or Brazilian?

We'll agree to disagree on that one..........You cant buy one anywhere else but from Danbury and this project has only just been completed so there was nothing for a watercooled Brazilian at the start of 2009 from any company. Dont want to argue though as you seem keen to have your say. Older german models yes but not w/c Brazilian.......

I think there are a couple of important things to bare in mind here:

1. The Brazilian T2c (its official title) - whilst resembling the German T2b - has significant engineering differences - in both aircooled and watercooled versions. Such differences, that it includes many parts from other models in the Volkswagen Range. For this reason I think it would be unrealistic for a lot of VW specialists to know the intricacies of the vehicle, given that the Brazilian has only been with us in the UK for less than 10 years. However this doesn't mean said specialists aren't capable of undertaking work on the Brazilian T2. My mechanic used to work on original T2s when he was doing his apprenticeship with a Volkswagen dealer and was delighted when I turned up with my Kombi - at his own VW business - to see the changes and work on the latest variant.

2. This can't be a common complaint as I've not read/heard about it anywhere else. People who are happy with their T2s don't tend to post to say they are - they just are. I'm just one of those who loves his Bay so much I want to shout about it on the internet and would encourage others to do so.

This was at the start of last year, so that proves that they were available before Oct as in your original post, so I'm guessing you have tried to corner the market there by asking the "engineering" company to solely supply you, then rebranding them "direct drive"

If you hunt around on the net, or know a good old fashioned vw mechanic with contacts, you can get one.

Like I said, they are available from other companies for all water and aircooled models, Brazilian and German, just have to know where to look.....

You're making a lot of assumptions in this post Den - you use the word "guess" twice. I think it's important to state facts here, not speculation.

Seems only fair too if you name the company that have offered you the rack and pinion option that will correctly fit a Brazilian Bay - both aircooled and watercooled.

Interesting thread! My bay passed its MOT in Jan - its a 55 plate - 2005 built in Brazil, Jan 2006 registered UK. I noticed a real difference after a service - much tighter again. Its never as precise as a rack and pinion - part of the character I guess. We did hire a lowered Brazilian Bay before we bought this one, and the steering was much heavier on the lowered one than our stock height one. For that reason, I don't want to lower ours. I also like the ease of access underneath.
