| Subject: Endurance through Design? or Development? Fri Nov 02, 2012 11:04 am | |
| How much of the endurance of the T2 has been down to Design or to Development? Quoting form John Reynolds book 'Sixty years of the Citroen 2CV, 1937-1997' - Quote :
- …the Beetle is best described as a triumph of development over design…..Despite appearances to the contrary, the last versions produced at Wolfsberg were entirely different from the first. In fact, only one component remained unchanged from the beginning of production to the end – a minor metal part holding a rubber sealing strip to the rim of the engine and luggage compartments.
….The 2CV’s life story was also woven together by a thread of permanence and continuity, but one of unchangeability rather than seamless improvement and progress….. apart from certain superficial, cosmetic details, the cars of the final batch from Levallois were more or less identical to those made there twenty years earlier. At the end, the car was still equipped with the same antiquated steering column lighting switch design that first made an appearance in 1938, on Citroen’s Traction Avant.
