Talking about Speedo's - I've still got to go and get mine and Alex's from the sports shop - not a pretty sight though!
Quite why they insist on them at the pool?

About 15 years ago we were staying at a Gite in rural France, near Bressiure with my two daughters, Ben; one of their boyfriends, and Alison's two children. It was probably our first holiday away since we'd got together.

We spotted a lido in a nearby village and decided we'd all go for a swim. So, off we go, and Ben and I get changed into our usual shorts and head for the pool. We'd been in about 5 minutes when one of the pool attendants spotted Ben and me and told us we'd have to wear speedos, as shorts weren't allowed.

In broken French we explained that we didn't have any, so he took us to the changing room where the staff tried to help by finding some spare ones they kept in the office. Now Ben was about 16 at the time, thin as a rake and they had no problem getting him into some.

Then it was my turn. I was 42 at the time, less corpulent than I am now but deffo not thin, probably a 34 waist. They gave me some trunks and somehow I spooned myself into them and headed out for the pool. The laughter that greeted me, haunts me to this day - Alison nearly wet herself and my two daughters were literally rolling about beside the pool. From memory, they'd given me a size small/medium and at the end of the session they almost had to be surgically removed from my nether regions.

Gabrielle and Nathan were 5 and 3 at the time - the sight may well have traumatised them for life!

To cap it all there was dead mouse floating in the pool - I pointed it out to one of the local children so he could avoid it - instead he grabbed it by the tail and started to throw it about in the pool. We left soon after!

We'll have to have a 'who looks worse in their Speedo's' competition - at least that may be one thing I'll win on the hols! LOL

That guide looks useful. I've said it before, but if you've got kids (or even if you haven't) the Puy du Fou is breathtaking. A bit of a drive from the site but well worth it. You need to get there early and stay for the evening spectacular - not cheap but memorable. We've been 3 maybe 4 times and I rarely go back anywhere more than once.

We'll not be going this time - we aim to chill and do as few miles as possible during the Forum week - but I can't recommend it highly enough.

If I've got to splash out and buy some budgie smugglers then I'm going to get my money / embarrassment's worth. A week of lounging for me too.

I'll be steering clear of the pool - may go in the sea though.

Yes he does mate I'm afraid. They don't have to be Speedos just the sort of 'trunks' that aren't what's described as Bermuda shorts - a bit like a swimming version of jersey boxers.

This in a country where people freely p*** by the roadside!

Thanks Absinthe - for a moment I thought that it was a link to a shop where you could buy both speedo's and headlamp deflectors !!

Can't help thinking that we have missed an opportunity here. Given that most of us (I might be wrong) didn't own Speedo's before the proposed trip we could have had Brazibay Speedo's made up emblazened with the logo ! Now that would be a real sight - all the 'men' in brazibay speedo's.

Just for the record: YOU'LL NEVER SEE ME IN SPEEDOS, Brazibay or no Brazibay!
