We spent Sunday with friends of ours in Bath - they looked after Tallulah for us in 2013 while we were in Asia. It just so happens they are planning a trip to France - family living North of Toulouse - at a similar time as the Kaper and looking at hiring a VW California for the trip.

We shared the Kombi Kaper plans with them and they are now seriously investigating booking on the same outgoing ferry and staying at Interlude for the first week before heading on to their family event.

So we might have VW Califonia joining us for the convoy!

I spoke with our friends from Bath earlier - Amy, Jean-Yves (French), Dylan (9) & Ross (7) - and they have hired a VW California from mid July for a month, they've also booked the afternoon ferry on July 24th from Portsmouth to Caen (they couldn't get on the same ferry as us) and will stay the night at the municipal site just down the road so they can meet us off of the ferry in the morning.

They will then join our convoy and stay with us at Interlude for 5 nights (also already booked) before heading on to Toulouse.

They've also booked their return ferry for August 9th, the day after us, so we might even see them again for the return convoy too.

Not long now!

All the talk of Speedos this week has reminded me to pick up a pair to take on the Kaper.

I had something similar while trying to book a campsite the other day, the sites 'contact us' page on their website was failing with an error message so I called to book instead. I told them there was a problem with their website, what the error message was and even how to fix it (or at least to say to their web developers so they could fix it) but they still didn't believe me - just checked and the page is still broken. There's just no helping some people.

Many of you may be aware that I like to keep the various wrist bands gained from attending different events. Today as I showered after a long bike ride, the wrist band from the Kombi Kaper last year broke in half and fell off!!!

Just as well we will be getting a new one in 9 weeks!!!!

Could I ask any of you seasoned European travellers whether you take any additional insurance out and if so who with?
I'm thinking about cover for emergency medical and personal belongings inc bikes.

We have an annual worldwide travel insurance policy....

I would think that your EHIC card should cover medical insurance, except for repatriation. Your household insurance probably covers you for loss of personal possessions. It might be worth considering insurance for cancellation due to family illness etc.

Insurance? Nah, don't believe in it...

The EHIC is nothing more than an easier way to get through the admin bit at a hospital abroad. Last year on the Kaper I had to visit the local A&E. Having the EHIC means they will treat you, but you still have to pay on the spot for medicines and 6 weeks later I received a bill for the services provided by the hospital.

Take out travel insurance. I have an annual worldwide policy and its good value for money compared to buying on a single trip basis.

Keep an eye on the euro rate guys it's on the up and up again...
You should be able to buy at approaching 1.40 Euros to the Pound now..
